Barges Write New History On Mississippi Freight Rise
Memphis dispatch notes a surge in inland river shipping as hundreds of towboats and barges carry large cargoes between Memphis St Louis Helena and other ports. A single tow from St Louis to New Orleans carried enough freight for two ocean liners. River freight growth stems from new barges, powerful tugs, better terminals and freight networks. From Aug 1 1931 to Dec 4 1931 Mississippi river cotton shipments reached 127 557 bales surpassing prior records while 1930 31 shipments totaled 199 586 bales.
