Bruno Richard Hauptmann filed a clemency petition with the New Jersey Court of Pardons. One of eight members cannot participate due to illness, leaving seven judges. Hauptmann would need five votes for clemency.
The Lindbergh family left New York aboard the American Importer for England citing threats and fear of further kidnappings. Colonel Lindbergh, once a key witness in Hauptmann's trial, will continue as technical advisor to Pan American Airways. The Hopewell home Highfield is unused as a center for child welfare.
Bitter cold and heavy snow hit the nation as more than a score of deaths were blamed on the weather. About 150 weekend traffic deaths were linked to hazardous conditions, with frigid winds and snowfall extending from the Canadian border southward, while Florida and Alabama saw contrasting, milder and snowy conditions respectively.

Pan American Airways China Clipper, carrying about a ton of air mail and the first air express for Pacific delivery, turned back 700 miles west of San Francisco due to a severe mid ocean storm. Captain Edwin C Musick reported strong headwinds and a broad storm front. the flying boat landed at Alameda at 5.50 AM after leaving San Francisco Bay at 3:15 PM yesterday.

In Los Angeles on December 23, evidence bolstering the accidental death theory regarding actress Thelma Todd was to be submitted to the county grand jury. City chemists police and DA investigators found the phaeton could fill the garage with carbon monoxide in two minutes and the car likely hadn’t been driven since weekend hours. Deputy DA George Johnson said witnesses would be questioned to establish whether Todd died early last Sunday or 12 to 20 hours later.
