Sergeant Gerald Neighbors of Hereford is listed among Red prisoners of war. He was captured December 1, 1950, by Chinese forces and later released. Neighbors and his family, including wife Shirley and eight month old Cynthia Kay, reside with his wife's parents in Hereford. He previously wrote to The Amarillo Times urging UN troop withdrawals, a letter acknowledged as Communist propaganda.
Panhandle families faced tense suspense as 15 of 48 missing soldiers were traced to Reds captives on a kim list released at Korean peace talks. The Globe Times notes the uncertainty for dozens of families in Borger Clovis and surrounding Tri-State area as names beginning with A through R were confirmed or remained unaccounted for. Names listed include Harvey N. Bailey A J Becker Jimmy L Chavez T D Harrison and James W Hart among others.
Amarillo sergeant Harvey N. Bailey, first Amarillo soldier reported missing in the Korean War, has been confirmed among prisoners released by the Reds. His wife and two children in Bowie celebrate word as the Bailey family recalls his wartime service from 1949 onward, including time in Japan and Korea with the 21st Regiment of the 24th Division.
Mrs Elberta Henderson has long prayed for news of her son Cpl Roy V Ratliff listed among 3198 Americans reputedly held as prisoners of war in Korea. Since December 1950 she has trusted scraps from Pentagon letters and a photo of unidentified prisoners for any sign of his fate.
PANMUNJOM Korea Dec 20 The UN list of Allied prisoners could delay the armistice deadline of Dec 27 as Communists demand translation of 132,474 Communist prisoners by the Allies and other details a monumental task. The Reds may block prisoner exchanges until after Christmas, risking a renewed war during Yuletide. Alan Winnington, a Communist newsman, charged Wednesday.
Pfc Jimmy L Chavez 21 son of Mr and Mrs F la Chavez of Borger listed as prisoner of war by Chinese Reds. Joined the service in 1949 and served with the Second Infantry Division in Korea since November 1950. Reported missing in action February 12 1951. Borger High School graduate. father employed at Phillips Petroleum Plains plant.
Lt Col Thomas D Harrison of Clovis New Mexico a West Point graduate and World War II veteran is listed as a prisoner of war in Korea after his jet aircraft was downed by ground fire on May 21 1951. His wife and four year old daughter reside in Clovis with an aunt in Amarillo Texas.
TAIPEH Formosa December 19 A 36 year old school teacher and a 25 year old student were executed Wednesday as Communist agents. Neely Greenhill Lowndes Insurance.
Four Borger area soldiers were listed by the Defense Department as prisoners of war. Maj. Newton W. Lantron, Cpl. Wesley D. Little, Pvt. Jimmy Chavez, and Sgt. Dewey E. Brittain were named. Lantron, son in law of Mrs. J. W. Garrard of Borger, was previously reported as a POW in a Red Cross broadcast. Little’s aunt, Mrs. D. E. Langston, confirmed the official notice, noting the family’s prior warning from Amarillo. Chavez’s parents also responded confirming their son’s status.
A Defense Department wire states that a service member's son is being held in a Red POW camp. The notice confirms the captivity and identifies the related military unit and country, stressing the ongoing efforts to verify conditions and secure consular access.
Foreign Aid Coordinator W Averell Harriman departed Paris for Washington today accompanied by Mrs Harriman and General Joseph T McNarney. The delegation travels amid postwar relief planning and allied assistance coordination.
A new policy requires monthly in advance payments for The Amarillo Daily News The Amarillo Globe-Times and The Sunday News-Globe. Rates are 1.30 per month for all three or 1.05 for Daily News or Globe-Times alone. Subscriptions for two months or more can be arranged at The Globe-News building.
President Truman issued a warning that prisoner of war lists from Korea are unverified and should be treated with skepticism. Press secretary Joseph Short urged media to stress uncertainty, noting no way to verify accuracy and urging caution for missing service members’ families.
Allied spokesman Brig. Gen. William P. Nuckols warned that a 30 day tentative cease fire line expires December 27 and urged Reds to stop delaying negotiations. He said UN may open fire after the deadline but this will not affect armistice talks. Red Correspondent Winnington complained the allied list of Red prisoners was entirely in English.
In Amarillo the Hearn family learns their 21 year old Sgt James L Hearn is home for Christmas after four years away. Meanwhile his uncle Capt Joseph Hearn is listed as a prisoner of war in Korea after parachuting from a B 29 near Okinawa.
Corporal A J Becker, 27, a former Amarillo resident and World War II Purple Heart recipient, is listed among war prisoners held by Chinese Reds. He came to Amarillo from Waco in 1946 and worked for Texas Company and on a pipeline project. His parents in Waco last heard from him in July, and his former wife Cora Bell Becker and their 3 year old daughter Maey Jane, of 1005 North Filabed, were reported missing in action on November 2, 1950. He is a Marine veteran from World War II.
