A 2376 ton barge Marie De Ronde burst into flames off Long Island while towed by the Wellfleet. Coast guards survived the five crew and rescued sixteen crafts as fog hampered efforts to save the vessel and its 2000 tons of coal.

A workers’ apartment building fire in Irkutsk on December 19 left 25 dead and nine seriously injured. Five women and four children were among the dead. Officials blamed lax fire protection enforcement. Firefighters found no water for ten minutes and delayed by missing extension ladders.
