In a dramatic rescue, volunteers from a Hamburg American liner saved 16 crew members from the sinking freighter Sisto amid towering waves and a gale. The lifeboat fought through hours of peril, with ships Europa Aurania Gerolstein and others standing by as the rescued crew were brought aboard safely. No one was harmed.
Nelson Roosevelt of the Panama American warns that twenty men could destroy the Panama Canal in 12 hours and block it for months. He cites his own investigations and dramatic proofs showing canal weaknesses and heavy guard measures along the waterway.
Eugene R. Black former governor of the Sixth Federal Reserve District and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Board died at his Atlanta home at age 61 after a heart attack. He served under Roosevelt and later worked with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and national banks. He was a son in law of Henry W. Grady and left a career in law for banking. Survived by wife Zac Harman Black.

In Wuhu Anhwei Province Chinese authorities ordered all Americans to vacate southern Anhwei and regroup in Wuhu for safety amid continuing bandit clashes. Consul George Anderson from Nanking announced the move as Mr and Mrs Stam are noted murdered. Public executions of alleged bandits occurred in Wuhu.
The Rialto and Mission Theaters will charge no money for two morning matinees Saturday, accepting cans of pork and beans sacks of potatoes oranges and apples for the Goodfellows Fund. Managers Oscar Dooley and J R Melleran coordinate the event to fill Christmas baskets for Amarillo families in need.
The 1934 naval conference adjourned sine die after Britain Japan and the United States could not reach an accord. Japan denounced the Washington treaty and urged resumption on a set date, but Britain and the U S deferred to keep adjournment open. The session at the House of Commons ended in disappointment and fear of a new arms race.

Lon G Gregory 48 cafe owner and former cattleman of Claremore and Bartlesville was found dead in a culvert near Broken Arrow Oklahoma. Austin Smith 21 was arrested in Tulsa. Gregory's car, wallet, and checkbook were recovered. police say injuries indicate homicide not accidental. Smith was being questioned with no charges filed yet.
An appellate court ruling allows 10 year old Gloria Vanderbilt to spend Christmas with her mother Mrs Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt at 49 East 72nd Street. The plan links a two treed Christmas with time split between her mother and aunt Mrs Harry Payne Whitney including a festive visit and gifts.
A Panhandle winter storm yielded only about three inches while a neighboring low pressure system moved northeast, dumping eight inches in St Louis and five inches in Springfield and Oklahoma City. Unsettled conditions with a chance of light showers are expected tonight and tomorrow. The day's low reached 24 degrees.

J. R. Morris of Amarillo was granted a conditional pardon by Gov. Miriam A. Ferguson. Morris had been convicted in Forty-seventh District Court on October 10, 1932, of theft and sentenced on October 12, 1932, to two to five years in prison.
City records show an operating fund of 180966.03, down from last year’s debt and a cash balance of 10978.21, per City Manager H R Smith and City Auditor J Baker. Tax collections are higher than 1933, at 24.4 percent, while Robey Funk and Frank Buckingham seek park designation for Northwest Tex grounds near Hospital.
A retort or pressure cooker exploded at the Amarillo Canning Plant injuring three men. Haskell Hughes, 101 MecMasters Street, suffered deep cuts and loss of teeth. W. D. Cloud, 24, 907 Monroe Street, hip injury. L. V. Lockard, 26, Pleasant Valley, minor bruises. All are in shock.
