H C Lakin president of the Cuba Company testifies before the Senate lobby committee about efforts to lower the Cuban sugar tariff. He says he enlisted James Mitchell, a protege of former New Jersey Governor Stokes, and notes Mitchell introduced him to former Senator Edge and Representative Bacharach. Another man, Goodrich, volunteered to help in the New York office. Earlier testimony cited Ewin P. Shattuck and John H. Carroll, hired for ties to Hoover, Smoot, and improving U S Cuba relations.
Wreaths hung on more than 60 McAlester homes as families mourn 62 miners killed in the Old Town coal mine blast. Rescue crews at noon reported 67 bodies recovered with five still trapped. Rescuers identified two charred miners and seven dead mules in the lowest level.
The Associated Press reports a $350 million merger unites Republic Iron and Steel of Youngstown Central Alloy Steel of Canton and Massillon Downer Steel of Buffalo and Bourne Fuller of Cleveland with subsidiaries. The new system centers in Northern Ohio and may prompt future ties with Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Inland Steel.

The Interstate Commerce Commission placed a final valuation of 101,500,000 for rate making on the owned and used properties of the Denver and Rio Grande railway as of June 30, 1919. The Rio Grande Junction Railway, leased to the Denver and Rio Grande, was valued at 2,280,000 and the Kenilworth and Helper Railroad, another Denver lease, at 119,500.
No arrest yet in the killing of a horse in the city as deputies say a Randall County charge against a Santa Fe brakeman remains pending. The case centers on a Shetland pony beaten with a two by four after escaping a feed lot. Authorities expect an arrest within days. Ambulance services listed as Blackburn’s and Boxwell Bros.

City engineers expect construction on the East Third Avenue underpass under the Santa Fe tracks to start the first Tuesday in January. Santa Fe directors meet Monday, January 6, in Chicago to approve plans, after which city crews can begin work.
In Romney West Virginia a liquor crazed man shot down three people at their homes then killed a county official at the jail and wounded three others including an 11 year old girl. Walter Crabtree 35 was arrested within an hour and faced possible mob violence as authorities sought state aid.
Dallas County Sheriff Hal Hood left for Huntsville penitentiary to witness the planned execution of Ben Aldridge convicted of a girl assault. Efforts to save him failed as Governor Moody refused clemency. Aldridge and co defendant Lee Roy Merriman were involved, with Merriman already executed November 27.
Austin Dec 18 Three death penalty murder cases were reversed and remanded because indictments failed to allege malice aforethought. Ardell Landers and Dewey Hunt in Dallas county and Jose de Pena in El Paso county had their convictions overturned. Pruett Jr. Dallas County, seeking 99 years for robbery by firearms, was affirmed.
Prime Minister J Ramsey MacDonald issued a Christmas and New Year greeting to Americans from 10 Downing Street. He expressed hope that 1930 would see a new era of peace and goodwill between the United States and Britain.
DALLAS Der 18 Word was received here today of the death of H. Y. Williams, former district passenger agent and traveling agent for the Santa Fe railroad for many years, in Narberth Pa. Tuesday night, Williams was well known in Texas railroad circles, having lived here many years.
Eugene E. Nordhaus, 64, longtime Texas legislator from 1915 to 1923, author of the free text book bill, and former editor of the Austin Labor Journal and the Railway Journal of San Antonio, died at his home in San Antonio.
J L Ingram of Frost was fatally injured when a car driven by a woman collided with the horse he rode in Corsicana. He died in a local hospital this morning.

In Dallas on Tuesday night a burglar identified as Claude Ray Parker was shot and killed after breaking into the Cotton Belt Freight House on East Fifth Street and firing on a special officer who surprised him. Parker, once jailed in Dallas and believed to run a stolen wares cigaret route, lies in the morgue as police check his identity.
