Wood carvers from Iowa rival old European art
Prank and Joseph Bily, brothers from West Union, craft large walnut and cherry clocks on their farm. They completed six pieces, including the Cathedral Clock replica, nine feet high and featuring lace doors and apostles, with chimes such as The Star Spangled Banner and Home Sweet Home. They plan a pine-constructed clock depicting major American historical events.

A garbled news page lists assorted vignettes from Washington Paris and New York. It mentions a bean crop shortage in the United States a foie gras trend in France and a misfired vaudeville gag about a Boston husband and his wife. It also notes legal cases and social anecdotes and a Pecos New Mexico item about a porlmarter emblem.

Pilgrims and Tippecanoe carved by farm brothers in evenings
On a farm, two brothers carve historical subjects like the Mayflower and Columbus landfall. They study the era before starting each clock size piece, using tiny homemade tools, with no formal training. Their patient, arching craft shows careful detail shaped by love of history.
