Amarillo heard something new as the Russian Symphonic choir performed on the Amarillo Artist course. Basile Xibalchich led twenty one singers who stood motionless, producing unique choral effects that imitated strings horns and soft band accompaniment without a baton.
An orchestral feel dominated a vocal program reproducing the Andante from Beethovens Fifth. Soloists included Mlle Stetzenko Mme Ivanova MrCrebenetzky and Mlle Schlekevsh. Audience was highly appreciative and backstage chatter revealed language gaps with conductor Basile Kibalchich and a young chorus girl Alexandra Sascha Allie Gregieroff sharing backstage moments.
Cecilian Singers and Clarendon college music students will give a Sunday afternoon program at Polk Street Methodist Church. The concert will be broadcast by KGRS, per Prof. Grover C. Morris dean of fine arts.
Alexandra notes the group gathering abroad where the choir communicates in Russian among themselves and uses French and German as well. Their street dress resembles American fashion, with some singers blending in so they could be indistinguishable from locals.
The Countess Ilya Tolstoy denounces Hollywood society as lacking Russia’s sense of tradition while praising the cinema community. She explains her move to films as a busy outlet during her husband Count Ilya Tolstoy’s project Resurrection and notes her encounter with many women pursuing purposeful careers in Hollywood.
