Officials forecast drastic changes in household routines as canned foods shrink and fats for soap fall under wartime measures. Food officials promise no one goes hungry but urge shifts in eating habits and possible early rationing of meat and nonessential items.
Joplin's rationing board officials state they will not resign or impose fuel oil rationing. In a letter to James G. Callaway, Tom J. Molloy urges proof of necessity and criticizes the program as impractical and wasteful. The board seeks to allow sales on temporary receipts and 80 to 85 percent of prior year's use with less red tape. Callaway notes that county-by-county deviation would require higher approval from national officials.
