Arthur Brisbane laments stock market mania and margin gambling driving high rates and weak prospects. He cites railroads’ October gains, autos and wages lifting prosperity, and warns lofty speculation harms work. Bethlehem Steel seeks 250 million from US Steel over a patent clash, hinting at a looming steel fight. Continued on page two.
West Texas is unsettled with rain in the east and cooler conditions in the Panhandle tonight and Tuesday. Oklahoma forecasts cloudy skies with rain in the east and unsettled weather into Tuesday. Temperature readings show a range from 27 at 7 am to a high near 57 at noon with colder values tonight.
The House discusses Austrian and Greek debts settlement and a resolution to appoint congressional committees for commemorative exercises. The House agriculture committee meets, and a joint House Senate committee on insular affairs convenes. Senate continues debate on the Boulder Dam bill.
Marion Talley the youthful Metropolitan Opera star remains in seclusion at the Capitol hotel on the day of her recital. She states she feels fine and will perform at the city auditorium tonight at 8 15. Seats are rapidly selling as Emil F Myers reports a strong turnout despite Panhandle rain.
President Coolidge urged solution of international disputes by diplomacy at the Pan American conference on arbitration. He praised Western Hemisphere unity and noted 20 governments attending seek peace and justice. He cited treaties, arbitration as policy, and warned against hasty action.
President elect Herbert Hoover is greeted in Valparaiso by a 21 gun salute and a large group of officials led by Mayor Lautaro Rosas. He travels by special train to Santiago after a brief stop. Mrs Hoover receives two pieces of colonial silver from the mayor.
The second week of Congress sees the Senate still tied to Boulder Dam unresolved while the House moves ahead with nine appropriation bills. Conferences weigh water distribution between Arizona and California and whether the dam will be government built or privately financed. Arizona fears tax power if the government builds the dam. No final compromise yet, but hope for an early settlement persists.
A man with a deformity of a hand was arrested after allegedly helping abduct three girls from their escorts, assault them, and release them. A girl described the hand to police, leading to the suspect’s capture as he ate breakfast in a cafe.
The White Star liner Celtic, outbound from New York on December 1 with 253 aboard, ran ashore at Roches Point near Cork amid a gale. Survivors from the Vestria disaster were reported aboard, and passenger lists included 67 cabin, 47 tourist, and 119 third class travelers. Joan Crawford was listed among first cabin passengers sailing from New York.
The Panhandle Poultry association meets at 7 50 tonight in the Board of City Development rooms to plan the eighth annual Tri State Poultry show at Municipal auditorium December 17 18 and stations.
The passenger train No. 2 collision near Dalhart leaves three dead including Amarillo fireman Dave Lynch. Engineer D. W. Robinson and engineer T. W. Molesworth are among the injured or dead. Wreck clearing and investigations follow as the death toll rises.
The Prince of Wales travels from Port Said to Boulogne to reach King George as doctors report the king’s condition still serious with improved signs but ongoing uncertainty. A bulletin notes lower fever and hopeful progress yet warns that anxiety may continue. Cadillac Bicycles advert appears at end.
Kirkland Texas, about 1,000 residents, battled a large fire that swept the town's business district. Childress fire teams were dispatched to help, but no further details were available as reports emerged from Dec 10.

Contest entries must be in by midnight Tuesday December 18 with final judging by Amarillo civic leaders. Awards will be announced December 21 at the Fair Theater, with full results in December 22 papers.
