Meat and fuel rationing proposals reach Congress

The administration proposes legislation to ration meat gasoline and other commodities. A draft measure was shown to a Senate judiciary subcommittee by Secretary Harriman. Undersecretary Foster said the plan could empower the government to buy the entire wheat crop if needed. Republicans reject broad price control and plan their own anti inflation attack.

Ration gas plan outlined by House Speaker in session

House Speaker Martin said two of the three points in a GOP substitute for Truman programs would be taken up early next week. Senate to act on voluntary price agreements while House works on expanded export controls. He predicted these two bills could be disposed of by adjournment next week.

Potter County Wet Vote Narrowly Keeps Liquor Sales

In Potter County a county wide local option election returned a wet result by 1 080 votes. Final tally 5 294 for sale and 4 264 against with 9 558 total. Wet wins in 19 precincts seven dry and one tied. A recount adjusted results at Bivins School and Precinct 3 swung to wet by 25 votes.

Three Panhandle crashes kill one and injure ten

A morning spree of ice slicks on Panhandle highways left G. W. Stone of Borger dead and ten others hospitalized in three crashes. The fatal wreck near Borger involved a parked car on a bridge and trucks from the Chemical Process Co. of Borger. Sheriff Hugh Anderson said Perkins and Bunker swerved to avoid the car and Stone became trapped between two trucks.

North Plains Covered By Light Snow Blanket

The northern Panhandle plains saw light snow that melted with warming temperatures. Dalhart led regional totals with 6 inches, followed by Texhoma 3 inches, Amarillo area reports and others. Weather forecasts call for partly cloudy skies and slightly warmer temperatures near 48 degrees tomorrow.

Shake-Down Charged To Albuquerque Head Of Business Bureau

Don Dreessen manager of the Better Business Bureau in Albuquerque faces a preliminary hearing on an extortion charge after a staged payoff of 410 dollars to settle a debt related to a supposed clean bill of health for marketing an anti freeze. The arrest followed a meeting with Morton Gould local agent for New Era Chemical Co. and district attorney M Ralph Brown.

Foreign Aid Bill Stalled in Debate

The House rejected a proposal to ban exports of fertilizer farm machinery and oil products under the foreign aid program as scarce at home. The tally was 145 to 17 after hours of wrangling delaying a final vote. Debate focused on aid to Italy France Austria and China and amid remarks by Representatives Abernathy Judd and Jarman on fertilizer and food goals.

Yeggs Fail in Attempt To Cut Open Two Safes

Burglars in Amarillo last night failed to open two safes at the Klock Construction office, stealing two goldfish instead of money. The second safe yielded only a radio and a bowl with water and two goldfish as investigators traced footprints through fresh snow. Police described heavy tools used but the safes remained locked, with bonds and savings certificates totaling about seven thousand dollars in each strong box. The owner Mary Helen Heath identified the fish.
