Traffic halted near Madeleine as Premier Schuman pressed to push emergency laws against Communist leadership amid a railway wreck blamed on sabotage. The national assembly voted measures to jail obstructionists and punish those blocking workers from returning to jobs.
The House Foreign Affairs committee urged prompt action on 590 million dollars of stop Communism aid for Europe and China. It said Soviet Russia has about 4.05 million armed men and eight elite states add 1.29 million, with American forces in Europe and the U.S. totaling over 1.0 million. The panel warned against costly aid and urged aiding while keeping domestic strength intact.
Soupy weather slowed highway travel across the Panhandle north of a Deaf Smith Randall Armstrong Donley line. Amarillo and Canadian reported the heaviest rains with 1.19 inches in Canadian and 1.09 inches at Freempe, while air travel remained suspended and farmers welcomed wetter conditions for wheat.
President Truman lands at Boca Chica Naval Air Station for a five day vacation in Florida. He will dedicate the new Everglades National Park on Saturday. The Sacred Cow transport completed a four hour and forty three minute flight from Washington. Weather is sunny with light morning showers.
Pampa resident Lt. Wesley B. Fleming, pilot of a C-47, is missing on a Pisa to Frankfurt flight. Two days of search by US forces and French gendarmes amid mountain snowstorms, with faint radio signals and grim prospects expressed by officials. Fleming, 20, lived near Pampa and is survived by his wife Geneva and two children.
The Globe begins its annual Christmas tale Santa and the Good Boy by Lucrece Hodecins tomorrow. It will run daily in The Globe through Christmas with Sleek the wicked man behind trouble and disrupting the plans.
A surplus privately owned airplane crashed one mile north of Goodnight killing five on a vacation flight. Four victims were identified as Marshall Q. Searle Dorothy L. Searle Ronald Searle and Mes Edward W. Kahn. The fifth victim, initially named Huhn, was identified as Mrs Kahn later as the plane’s crash left Jacksonville bound for Santa Ana.
Reports of bonfires on a mountainside near the French border sent searchers toward a new area at dusk as they continued to hunt for a US Army transport plane missing five days with 20 people aboard. The association of American Railroads also asked for a 3 percent freight rate increase to offset rising costs.
George Truman and Cutford Evans, globe circling Piper Cruiser pilots, are delayed a day in Amarillo after a ceiling collapse. They arrived at English Field and were feted at a dinner with press conferences and interviews. They plan appearances, then continue to Oklahoma City and beyond to Kansas City Chicago New York and Washington before ending at the Capitol.
City officials announce an employee safety drive after rising traffic and other accidents cost 47100 in the past year. Transportation Director Lefty Fowler reports insurance premiums rose nationwide. Engineer Lloyd Crews will assist in shaping the program with Ordway-Saadena Company.
Lubbock residents backed civil service and minimum salary plans for police and fire units and approved city bond issues totaling 4.924 million for electric water and sewage improvements. The election mirrored moves in Fort Worth Dallas Port Worth and Waco as civic groups lobbied for or against the civil service expansion.
Secretary General Trygve Lie announced Bunche as principal secretary to the five nation Palestine partition commission and said he will visit Palestine. Lie also named Victor Hoo of China as head of the Korean Independence Commission set up by the 1947 assembly. Bunche is an American Negro who previously worked for the State Department.
Governor Beaufort H. Jester plans to fly to Oklahoma for a meeting of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. He will return by Friday for a State Democratic Executive Committee meeting in Austin if weather allows.
