A brisk north wind kept Amarillo residents bundled as temperatures dropped to the low 20s in the region. Washington December 3 The Navy alleges Capt Charles B McVay III bore direct responsibility for the loss of the cruiser Indianapolis and 880 crewmen after the ship exploded and sank off the Philippines July 30 The court martial opened at the Washington Navy Yard with eight judges accusing him of failing to order abandonment and to pursue a zig zag course amid submarine danger.
Secret German documents disclosed at the International Military Tribunal show Hitler’s 1938 plans to invade Czechoslovakia and the Munich agreement signed just before Keitel ordered troops to jump-off points. The probe cites warnings of a Prague attack, Luftwaffe plans, and Italian awareness of German aims.
Maj. Gen. Sherman Miles testified before a Senate committee that Lt. Gen. Walter Short’s Nov. 28 1941 reply to a Washington war warning was totally inadequate. The testimony referenced Marshall’s Nov. 25 warning and Bicknell’s affidavit about papers destroyed by a Honolulu consul and related staff meetings ahead of Pearl Harbor.
Miles testified the affidavit came from Lt. Col. Henry C. Clausen as senators review the prewar warning. Lucas calls the code burning message one of Washington's most important missives to field commanders before the Japanese strike. Miles says Marshall's November 27 1941 message provided sufficient alert to prevent the Pearl Harbor attack.
