Pioneer Amarillo telephone man recalls early system
H H Davenport, who built Amarillo's first telephone network in 1907, recalls a barbed wire town. The Panhandle Telephone and Telegraph Company grew to about 3,000 telephones in Amarillo, with party lines common. Davenport sold to Southwestern Bell in 1916 and later worked in livestock feeds.
