County Board to consider a tentative plan to merge city and county health departments into a full-time unit with state funding half the cost. A committee led by W M Ehlers and including Dr E A Johnston and Dr H H Larson will present a budget Friday at 2 pm.
Development of air mail service alongside passenger routes to central Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma and northern Texas is the plan of the Western Air Service Corporation newly organized with 4 100 000 capital. Nathan L Jones is president and general manager. It has taken over Brower Air Service which has run an Omaha to Oklahoma City air line for 18 months. Daily passenger service will start immediately from Oklahoma City with stops at Blackwell Wichita Salina Belleville Lincoln and Omaha.
Los Angeles August 28 movie luminaries and hundreds of admirers prepared to accompany Lon Chaney’s body on its final journey. His service paused industry wide at 3 pm for two minutes as his cortège left a funeral chapel for Forest Lawn Glendale burial beside his father. Honorary pallbearers included Mayer Schenck Thalberg Browning Carey Barrymore Novarro Haines Tibbet Cody Selwyn. The entire motion picture industry suspended work worldwide at MGM offices for two minutes.
Potter county commissioners plan a new $420,000 courthouse to double floor space and allow future growth over 15 to 25 years. The design places the county clerk, tax offices, and related departments on the second floor, with space to expand. Separately, the Interstate Commerce Commission moved grain rate revision from October 1 to January 1, 1931, narrowing rates for western and export shipments under Hoch-Smith guidance.
A roller coaster derailment at an Corpus Christi amusement park last night caused the death of 17 year old Ina Morton and serious injuries to seven others. Jesse Henley of Texarkana remained in critical condition with a crushed head. One car left the track while the other car halted cleanly at the wrecked section.

City and school officials praised Crocker’s findings and expect completion near schedule.
In New York harbor last night a Clyde Mallory freighter named Neches collided with a tow scow, causing the ship to capsize. Captain Eber Keteo was trapped by a load of pipe as his 24 crew members were rescued by coast guard boats and police launches. Chief Engineer F Carey of Hillside, New Jersey, attempted to free him but fell overboard as the vessel rolled. Carey reported the captain’s final words, urging others to save themselves.
James F. Jewell of Fort Morgan Colorado aged 84 was elected commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic for the coming year at Cincinnati.
A Texas sanitation school wraps up with an inspection trip to creameries meat plants helium and serum plants. The annual short school sessions open in Amarillo with lectures by Drs Flickwir Mahone and Yates as Mae Vernon and Mrs Vineyard stage a surprise for attendees. The Amarillo Chamber hosts a banquet and entertainment for delegates as Dr J R Read presides and officials plan the next meeting.
Cape Gris Nez France August 2k Miss Elsie West an English swimmer abandoned her bid to swim the English Channel. London August 28 nineteen year old Elsie West called Mickey by friends, native of Swansea, a big girl who spent months at Brighton Preparatory to the swim begun last night.
A. D. Payne murder case details emerge as Potter County grand jurors convene for the third day without reporting. District Attorney Edward W. Thomerson notes no definite indictment time. The Menard County connections tie local figures to the case amid regional coverage.
Funeral services for Lieut. Maurice M. Works aged 29 son of Judge and Mrs F P Works will be held at Park Street Methodist Church at 3 PM Saturday. The body arrives from Honolulu at 2 AM Saturday and a Brooks Field party including Lieut Litchenberger and a mechanic will fly in to pay respects. Works who served in the U S flying service died August 18 near Honolulu after a crash. The body will be received in Amarillo by Blackburn Panera Home arrangements pending.
Washington and Austin dispatches report bankers and relief committees urging drouth affected farmers and businesses to rely on local banks and credit groups for financing. State highway officials also mandate local labor use on road projects to employ drought stricken farmers where feasible.

Santa Fe and Vinings country lines noted rains at many points, Amherst reporting about an inch and a half.
Kansas City ends second milk strike in ten months after an agreement to arbitrate demands of the Pure Milk Producers Association. The dispute involved milk dumping property destruction and other violence, with representatives of distributors and the association reaching a settlement last night.
A 12 year old boy, Alfred Hill, died at Luna Park Zoo after climbing a fence into a tiger enclosure. The animal mauled him, tearing scalp and arm with its claws, ending his search for adventure in the artificial jungle.
The Associated Press reports Civil District Judge William Manterson of Houston killed himself yesterday at 9 40 A M The death was confirmed by local authorities and noted as a self-inflicted tragedy in Houston Texas an official account stated.
Henry C Harding manager of Harding Ranch notes the mile mountain handicap race planned for Labor Day at Harding Ranch will be a feature of a two day celebration. The Pike s Peak style course is hazardous with tight curves and passes and only one car on the road at a time. Drivers warned to race at their own risk and an ambulance will be on site. Ten or 16 entries expected.
United Press report from Baltimore notes Henry L Mencken, famed critic labeled a woman hater, wed Miss Sara Powell Haardt in a small Episcopal ceremony. The ceremony drew few witnesses, with only close friends attending. Mencken defended marriage as less dreadful than popular lore, citing his creed and his book In Defense of Women. The couple married after a rapid engagement in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
