Past catches up with pair held in robbery of depot

Alton Chappell, 24, and R. B. Chappell are jailed in Claude after being charged with an armed robbery of the Fort Worth & Denver depot. The brothers, with prior records, faced questions from Texas Rangers and local authorities as details emerged of the depot holdup and related investigations.

Registrants Should Have Identification For Selective Service

Potter County draft boards urge registrants to carry proper ID and copies of discharge papers. Beginning Monday at 8 a.m. 25 year olds register in Municipal Auditorium rotunda. veterans provide service entry date discharge fate and serial number. Registration runs to Sept 18 with after date options at the Old Library Building Sixth and Taylor. Oldham County registrants to register at Oldham County Courthouse in Veena.

Bandits Take Cash and Car Near McLean

Strong-arm robbers who threatened to kill Melvin McCabe of McLean took his car and money Wednesday night. They lured him on a country road three miles southeast of town, forced a turn and fled after he jumped out. Tracking led deputies toward a point south of the robbery as Amarillo police were notified to pursue the couple and vehicle.

Centipede Encounter Reported By Mrs Mathewson

Mrs L Mathewson of 2506 Mirror describes a large centipede she encountered at her home. She says it was about 6 inches long with 22 pairs of legs and she used a mop to confine and remove it.

Two Youths Admit Stealing Car and Wrecking It

A 15 year old admitted to police that he and a younger friend took part in an automobile theft. The car, a 1941 Chevrolet, belonged to Milton M. Wilkins and was wrecked while fleeing police in a pursuit. The older boy, 18, was recovering at home from minor injuries.

City Hall Invaders Set Up Own Regime in Berlin

Backed by a roaring crowd, German Communist leaders seized Berlin City Hall and formed a rump administration. About 500 SED demonstrators forced police lines, called for a Soviet aligned regime, while 10,000 outside chanted. No casualties reported as the scene unfolded amid the Soviet sector.

William Ellis 75 longtime Amarillo resident died Thursday morning at 10 28 at his home 700 Lincoln funeral arrangements pending He was born August 6 1878 in Nashville Tenn came to Mansfield Texas with his parents as a child joined Fort Worth and Denver and retired about 15 years ago He married Birdie Ellis March 1897 their 50th anniversary was celebrated last year Survivors include his wife four daughters one son two sisters and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren

Dallas Attack Blamed on Giant Black Man

Dallas police say a 25 year old Black man confessed to blinding William Slack with battery acid and assaulting his wife Mozelle Slack with a hammer in a lane near Dallas on Aug 16. The couple, estranged, were attacked after being inside a parked car. Slack endured surgery to avoid blindness, while Mozelle was treated for head injuries. The assailant, described as 6 feet 4 inches tall, was arrested in front of his home.
