Soldier absentee votes may delay 1944 election result

New York August 25 Associated Press survey shows over two million service members have requested absentee ballots and more will vote in November. Eleven states delay counting such ballots possibly delaying the outcome for weeks maybe until December 7 when Nebraska's absentee tally could decide seven electoral votes for Roosevelt or Dewey.

Weather bulletin notes cloudy conditions across Amarillo and vicinity with light rain and occasional thunder. West Texas expected mostly cloudy with intermittent rain, while New Mexico sees scattered showers today and Friday. Highs reach 85 to 95, 24 hour highs around 93 with a low near 69 and noon 74.

Freight wreck near Rams 19 miles west of Shamrock injures three

An east bound Rock Island freight crashed into an extra freight near Rams nineteen miles west of Shamrock early this morning. Five empty tank cars and an engine overturned while a caboose was damaged extensively. Three men were injured, none seriously. The wreck occurred between 4 and 5 o'clock.

Weatherman H C Winburn expressed hope for rain as light showers were predicted for this afternoon and tomorrow. Yesterday moisture was seen only in Hereford and the South Plains while clouds keep temperatures in the 80s.

Air Colossus Bombers Strike Deep Into Germany and Balkans

Allied air forces led by American heavy bombers from Italy and Great Britain attacked central and northern Germany and Balkan targets as weather cleared. The raid included 750 Liberators and Fortresses targeting oil refineries, airfields, and industrial sites in Czechoslovakia Hungary Yugoslavia and Italy with 1,300 additional bombers and 750 fighters striking Germany from Britain. The US Eighth Air Force reported generally good to excellent results. British RAF Mosquitoes and Mitchells later attacked Cologne Ruhr and a German fuel dump near Dieppe with all aircraft returning safely.

Bordeaux Liberated By Allies

Allied troops and French partisans reportedly liberated Bordeaux the fourth largest city in France. Radio Algiers said interior forces occupied the port this morning with details unclear. Unconfirmed reports placed American units near Angouleme and along the Loire corridor.

Finnish Peace Rumors Grow As Minister Departs

Stockholm August 24. The Finnish minister to Sweden G A Gripenberg left for Helsinki by air in what is viewed as linked to Finland leaving the war. Reports say Finland has not yet sought direct contact with Moscow. Gripenberg has made a second Helsinki trip in two weeks. Observers think Romania's exit could speed action by Baron Mannerheim.

Gunners Return After 10 Days With French Maquis

Sgt. Robert Allen of Austin Texas and Cpl. Harold Waldron of Columbia Alabama, B 26 gunners, returned to base today after ten days in enemy territory protected by French Maquis. They bailed out when their Marauder was shot down over Toulon on August 13 and were sheltered fed and hid by patriots until shelling forced them from the hills Tuesday night. An RAF officer found them near Toulon as he entered the town with French troops.

Public Hearing Focuses on Canadian River Flood Control

County officials from the Panhandle business leaders editors and landowners will attend a public hearing called by Col. F J Wilson Corps of Engineers to discuss flood control on the Canadian River. The 10 30 Friday morning session at the Amarillo Hotel will consider dam construction near Sanford and invite land owners to speak.
