Twelve Killed in Two Road Crashes Near San Augustine

A church bus and a heavy lumber truck on a narrow bridge 13 miles south of San Augustine Texas collided last night killing seven and injuring at least three. Identified dead include Ethel Boyens and her son Raymond 13 Norris Brown and others. Bus driver Chuck Langford and truck driver Odessa Oliver were unhurt. salvage and witness accounts describe debris and chaos. The crash occurred about 100 yards south of the Rosevine Pentecostal Church. Five more people died in a separate crash near San Antonio.

Dog Hater Poisons 4 More Pets in South Amarillo

At least four dogs were poisoned in a four block area of South Amarillo within the last week. A fox terrier owned by Tommie Price, 8, son of Walter T. Price Jr., was poisoned about ten days ago. A shepherd belonging to Buddy Whippo, 10, was poisoned about a week ago. Two pedigreed wire haired terriers owned by Grace Meyer were also impacted.

Soil Expert Promoted to Panhandle A&M College Research

H. H. Finnell, a leading authority on soil conservation and wind erosion, has been promoted and transferred from Amarillo after more than a decade. He will join Panhandle A&M College at Goodwell, Oklahoma, for research with the Soil Conservation Service. Finnell helped lead early Dust Bowl containment efforts and previously directed wind erosion and wheat moisture studies across a five state region. The Finnells will keep their Amarillo home at 1026 Bowie.

Grocer Celebrates 99th Birthday Milestone

A. J. Lundegreen marked his 99th birthday Friday describing strong health and vigor. He runs a grocery store at 2608 North West Fifteenth and says he feels capable of digging holes with the best of them.

General's Bomber Limps to Washington

A disabled Flying Fortress carrying Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg landed safely at National Airport. Vandenberg returned from Europe and was en route to a joint chiefs conference at Newport Rhode Island. Also aboard were Eugene M. Zuckert and Maj. Gen. Glen W. F. McKee. one engine had stopped over the Atlantic. Secretary Symington had traveled to Europe but was not on the plane.

Doctors Fixing Tot's Inside-Out Bladder

A four year old from Borger underwent a two hour operation at St. Joseph's Infirmary in Houston to correct an inside out bladder. Linda Markham, unaware of the seriousness, faced the surgery with her parents Mr and Mrs C H Markham at her side. A Houston woman who learned the child would be alone rushed to offer comfort. Berlin clashes as Russian backed police raid sectors

Russian military police and German police backed by Moscow seized five German officers in the American sector during a Berlin blockaded area raid. Earlier, Russian backed police arrested about 600 Germans at Potsdamer Platz while crowds clashed with Communist police.

First Norther Forecast to Hit Amarillo Area

The first northern cold wave of the season is predicted to strike Amarillo and surrounding areas early Saturday. The US Weather Bureau observer at English Field says temperatures will drop 10 to 12 degrees, with thundershowers possible in the eastern Panhandle while Amarillo stays dry. Winds may rise to 25 mph Friday afternoon, with a Friday high of 94 and a Saturday high near 83.

Judge Kinney Dies in Miami at 75

Judge J. E. Kinney, 75, pioneer Panhandle lawyer, died in his sleep at his Miami home. He came to the Panhandle in 1890s from New York, practiced law after stints at a grocery store and real estate, and was the father of Sterling E. Kinney. He married Rena Carter in 1900.
