A briefing urged ex service men and women to calculate leave due before going to the auditorium. Mr Landis emphasized using emergency furloughs and convalescent leave directed by a medical officer to determine entitlements.
A military official stated that rest in combat zones does not count as leave while all other leave types remain counted. These include delays en route rehabilitation furlough on return from overseas and port of embarkation leave.
The leave due is calculated by deducting leave actually taken from accrued leave at two and a half days per month of active duty. Service in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps cannot be counted toward the accrual rate.
The special headquarters at the Auditorium will be open 9 to 5 for two days with possible extension. Red Cross and Veterans Administration workers will aid veterans in filing claims. Forms are available at the Post Office windows, Veterans Information Center, and American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars offices.

In St Paul Minnesota on August 20 a 15 year old girl Joan Devo of St Paul High School leapt from a bridge into the Mississippi River. She swam 160 feet to shore and was saved by police after sustaining serious injuries. The girl said she jumped while crossing to visit her mother and did not know why.
Chinese Communist forces announced full mobilization to crush Chiang Kai-shek’s National armies in what they described as a nationwide civil war. Kalgan radio urged Red troops to shatter Chiang’s offensive as villages from Manchuria to Kiangsu prepared for possible air raids.
President Truman altered vacation plans due to weather and moved the Williamsburg yacht southward away from the Maine coast. Press Secretary Charles G. Ross told reporters aboard the destroyer Weiss that the party is heading in a southerly direction with no fixed destination and will not anchor tonight.
