Fascist Italy readies its air force for intervention in the Spanish Civil War as France debates non intervention. Italian pilots and bombers, including 1,750 commissioneds and 41,900 enlisted, stand ready with ships and reserves to support Franco's Loyalist opponents.
Dynamite blast damaged two Fort Worth night clubs, Ringside and Oasis, injuring no one. Investigators considered anti vice crusader or slot machine war motives as theories. A 20 foot fuse suggests timed blasts. police guard other venues as managers report no clear motive.
TWA engineers outlined a plan to spend about 1.25 million dollars on Amarillo airport improvements including runways and a modern station. The city would provide the site and seek federal aid, with cooperation from the Chamber of Commerce and Trans Continental and Western Air officials. City support was confirmed by Mayor Ross Rogers as engineers noted the English Field site could not be acquired.
The attorney general ruled the Potter County Commission may appoint a county school superintendent only until the next general election on November 3. With Carl G. Clifft resigning September 1, about twenty applicants remain, and the commission postponed a decision to August 24 after a run-off election.
Mine rescue crews battled water gas and debris in a coal mine at Moberly Missouri to reach four men trapped 110 feet below. Arnold Griffith, state mine inspector, warned it could take 48 hours before access is cleared. The entombed are Ed Stoner Jr Demmer Sexton Jack McCann and George Cameron.
Senator William G. McAdoo of California halted in Amarillo overnight en route to Washington D C by private plane. He arrived at English Field at seven with a three member party and spent the night at a local hotel before departing at 4 30 this morning aboard a four passenger Beachcraft.
Strikers and sympathizers at the Carapolis Blast of Standard Steel Spring Company were driven to cover by tear gas during a clash with non striking workers. The battle lasted about thirty minutes as 2,500 spectators watched with 300 pickets. windows were broken and police dispersed the crowd. The unrest followed a walkout by about 1,000 employees demanding union recognition higher wages and a 40 hour week.
A. M. Johnston a 47 year old Sudan farmer was jailed in Lubbock after Sheriff Loyd and Texas Rangers arrested him on a murder charge for the July 11 1932 killing of A E Russ near Sudan. Russ was 60 and his widow testified against Johnston.
In Wichita Falls on Aug 18 a regional rally of young Democrats is anticipated to draw as many as 4000 from the northern Texas area. Speaker lineup includes Wright Patman and Farle B. Mayfield Jr with regional and state directors among others. delegations from Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas expected. Attendees include political figures noted but Allred Roosevelt and Josh Lee will not attend.
Minnesota Governor Floyd B Olson, ill at Mayo Clinic Hospital, telegrams Senator LaFollette urging liberals to unite for Franklin Roosevelt and oppose Alfred Landon. Olson would join a Chicago conference of Progressive leaders to support Roosevelt. Also notes Quezon’s 58th birthday in Manila and an FHA loan advertisement for Herman Wright seeking the state representative seat.
Dick Merrill and Harry Richman tune Richman’s Vultee monoplane at Floyd Bennett Field for a round trip to London. They flew from Albuquerque with a Kansas City leg in 5.5 hours and hope to depart Saturday after weather and Commerce Department clearance.

State Railroad Commission workers under Petroleum Engineer W F Cottingham have started a comprehensive survey of natural gas conditions, aiming for year end completion. The study will show gas per barrel ratios for oil production across the state. September demand is projected to dip slightly from August despite cooler weather, with total nominations at 1,306,653,000 cubic feet daily.

Meteorologist A. W. Cook forecast relief for the Middle West with tonight and tomorrow rain in northern and central Illinois Indiana and northern Missouri. Iowa faces heat relief but showers possible only in the southeast. Cooler weather expected in Wisconsin and lower Michigan. Corn futures slipped after opening, later rising over 3 cents a bushel with September at 1.16, a peak not seen since 1925.
In Hollywood, the court awarded guardianship of 13 year old Edith Fellows to her paternal grandmother Elizabeth Fellows after a suit by her mother Harriet Fellows. Edith’s $2700 bank account and $200 weekly screen salary were placed in trust. Edith testified she loves her grandmother and is not used to loving strangers.
