In Huntsville Texas on August 17, R T Bennett a 31 year old Dallas Negro prepared to be executed by electric chair for the choking death of Mrs Leona Smiley Buchanan last winter. Warden Ward visited him in his cell noting he was eating well and determined to die saying it killed her and I am ready to go.
Amarillo police convert hickory singletrees into clubs at the central station workshop. Each club is crafted from one tree, boiled in linseed oil, and polished. Officers like Patrolman Rosy King note the longer a club is carried, the harder it becomes.
In Amarillo hundreds of Blue Eagles NRA insignia posters are exhausted with a second supply to be ordered. Postmaster W S Kenyon reports continued demand as NRA council and adjustment committee meet with firm representatives to clarify code provisions and urge cooperation. Detroit August 1745 Senator James Couzens republican testifying before the Detroit bank investigating jury said President Hoover asked him during the last campaign to issue a statement approving a 90 million dollar loan to the Chicago bank led by Charles G Dawes for political purposes. He said he would consent if advised by the attorney general that it would not violate the law. He added that all loans had been confidential until July 15 when a law required the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to report to Congress on all secret loans. He said he approved the Dawes loan though not formally issued. The nation was shocked when the matter leaked.
In Arkansas a large posse confronted alleged Underhill gang members 25 miles southwest of Bentonville. Gene Johnson was critically wounded, his wife injured, as machine guns fired in Springtown area after officers from Oklahoma and Kansas closed in late tonight. Federal investigators in Dallas pursued Urschel kidnap gang leads as Harvey Bailey faced heavy guard after his arrest near Paradise.
Washington reports that wheat farmers who cut acreage under the recovery program will receive cash without deductions for government indebtedness, per Secretary Wallace. He also noted southern cotton farmers must repay less than 10 million of the 110 million they receive from the campaign benefits.
Hereford August 17 The murder trial of W H Woody accused slayer of his father in law Wade Williamson reached the testimony stage. An argument over whether Mrs Woody would press a wife beating charge against her husband allegedly precipitated the slaying at Woody s farm near Hereford last July 17. Woody was shot twice and brought into the courtroom on a cot with leg wounds.
New York August reports reveal Dr. Robert A. Millikan’s studies showing cosmic rays as a powerful energy source. Army planes carried electroscopes to 29 000 and 22 000 feet to track ionization, aiding calculations of atmospheric ionization and the rays’ reach across hundreds of miles.
Havana reports President de Cespedes named Mar quez Sterling ambassador to the United States to succeed Oscar B Cintas. Sterling, ex ambassador to Mexico, is a journalist amid reports of postrevolutionary unrest as police and soldiers besiege a house tied to Machados and Porrist activity. two officers wounded and a crowd rescues a Porrista suspect.
A midlife bank robber was killed in Starbuck after a shotgun blast from Rudolph Hanson, restaurant owner, as his youthful partner escaped. The loot was recovered and the alarm spread by Florence Dulman, a telephone operator.

First Assistant Attorney General Filbert Hooper informed Fort Worth District Attorney Jesse Martin that selling beer for delivery in Texas before September 15 would violate the law.
