Stockholders voted to instruct directors to investigate providing a housing development to meet defense needs. Discussion from the floor conceded that additional capital would probably be required to finance such a program.
Stockholders voted a six percent annual dividend for the current year based on earnings from rental income from the Globe Manufacturing and Frito buildings. Directors elected include Jesse Rogers Hugo Loewenstern E W Hardin Jay Taylor Charlie Crowe R M Mills and Herbert Willbort.
A four member UN and Communist subcommittee, meeting in Kaesong, began work to resolve the armistice buffer zone issue. Delegates total two per side with interpreters, aiming for a compromise on the ceasefire line. The main committee remains in recess as talks shift to the subcommittee.
Rex B Baxter of Amarillo and Mayor Whiteside of Lubbock plan to press Washington on what defines the emergency pledge tied to the Canadian River Dam bill. They meet Senators Connally and Johnson and Representatives Mahon and Rogers to seek clarity on emergency duration and possible inclusion in the Bureau of Reclamation budget.
A man awoke to two burglars crouched between his house and garage in West Eighteenth. He loaded a .45, and the suspects fled as he moved toward the kitchen. A boy saw two men running in the alley, police were alerted, and two suspects were taken into custody with more questioned in ongoing phantom burglary cases centered in Southwest Amarillo.
The Panhandle enjoyed cooler morning air with a 87 degree high yesterday, while statewide readings topped 107 in Fort Worth. Dalhart reached 83, Gage Oklahoma 88, Guyman 84, Clayton New Mexico 78, with Dallas and Mineral Wells at 106 and Wichita Falls 104. Amarillo forecast calls for mild today, warmer tomorrow with highs near 89 then 93.
Potter County Tax Collector Hubert Cole estimated a six million dollar rise in county valuations for tax purposes, funding a county budget of 3,066,725.80 for 1952.
County Auditor Boone Moreland released the 1952 budget totaling 68.32 million in valuation with an 80 cent tax rate and a 74 million preliminary assessment. The rise reflects continued building and improvement programs and plans to fund a Northwest Texas Hospital project with over one million dollars of the increase. Expenditures are covered by receipts estimated at 3.243 million.
The U S Weather Bureau notes continued fair conditions in Amarillo and vicinity through Friday with mild today and warmer tomorrow. Panhandle outlook favorable for outdoor operations with a warming trend in the coming days. West Texas and New Mexico regions expect clear to partly cloudy skies with a few isolated thundershowers in the northeast today.
Amarillo residents await this week’s mystery jaywalker as the Jaycees safety campaign offers a $20 prize for identifying the person who jaywalks by crossing against signals or stepping into traffic. Ted Lokey leads the effort with sidewalk signs reading Death Stalks Him Who Jaywalks.
Austin recorded 43,877,000 gallons of water used from midnight Monday to Tuesday, topping the prior July high of 43,495,000 gallons. The heat wave continued to drive demand as city crews tracked the surge.
A 9 year old girl was kidnaped during a breakfast attack at the Fort Worth home of Mr and Mrs Schler as two men burst in amid a dispute over an adoption. One assailant was captured after a struggle. the other fled with Carroll Jean. Four shots were fired, none injuring anyone. A two state alert was issued for the fleeing couple with Oklahoma tags.
A 31-year-old part time receptionist admitted stealing 3298 from Dr Eugene Secord’s office to buy clothes sports gear and other items to keep her husband happy. She pleaded guilty before Recorder W Mc Kay Skillman and was freed on personal bond.
The Amarillo Country Club reports theft of six thousand dollars in checks and about thirty dollars cash from the club bookkeeper Marvin L Brown. After rain washed ink, many checks remain blank, but several have been recovered along a Dallas highway and nearby roads. Police are investigating and affected parties were asked to issue new checks.
A Dallas lab experiment using a morphine sedative and cortisone resulted in the deaths of Jack Clifford, 30, a lab technician, and Ardys Pearson, 26, a secretary, after they were given the wrong sedative. Dr. Slaughter said the error occurred while testing pain-killer effects and that sworn statements will be provided to state investigators.
Two former Army secret agents accused of killing their OSS commander on a wartime mission behind enemy lines face extradition to Italy for trial. Maj. William V. Holohan of New York headed the three man team. Holohan’s body was found in Lake Dorta with a neck bullet wound. The defense department named Aldo Icardi of New York and Carl LoDolce of Rochester as the alleged slayers, with LoDolce reportedly confessing.
City Traffic Engineer Harold Miller will propose two new through streets to the city commission. Harrison Street from Third Avenue to the south city limits and Twenty-fourth Avenue from Buc Street to Bowie Street would become through streets for more of their length, extending cross traffic regulation by stop signs.
Cash on hand to build a $40,000 Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center in Amarillo nears $6,000. Campaign chair Do J Humphrey reported many pledges. Recent gifts include Mrs Jack K Lankford 500 dollars Noble Paulk 100 dollars Cecil Obrien 100 dollars and Denver Amarillo Express 100 dollars. Materials are also being donated for the building south of the Eighth Avenue overpass.
New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey departed Auckland by air on August 16 for the first leg of his homeward journey following a six week fact finding tour of the Pacific region.
In the American League Boston Philadelphia Scarborough and Rosar Shantz and Tipton led a busy afternoon as New York played Washington Detroit faced Chicago and Cleveland met St. Louis with late scores not available. In the National League Pittsburgh faced the Cubs with Poholsky and Rice and Dickson and Garagiola while Brooklyn and New York traded zeros before Newcombe Campanella Maglie and Westrum. Tonight Chicago visits Cincinnati.
