Messina Falls Within Range As Allied Drive Advances

Reds Push Toward Bryansk and Kharkov Fronts

Soviet forces, after seizing Karachev east of Bryansk, drove Germans back across the Snezhet and pressed within 20 miles of Bryansk. They also advanced on Kharkov from multiple fronts, while German counterattacks surged in several sectors. Casualties ran high with hundreds of towns taken, hundreds of enemy troops killed, and dozens of tanks and guns destroyed.

Milan Burned as RAF Bombs Hit Industrial Heartland

Milan workers marched through the burning ruins in a peace demonstration as RAF bombers struck the city for the third time in four days. Buildings including the cathedral towers and Royal Palace were damaged and fires raged while thousands fled toward the frontier.

Daniel Appointed County Commissioner in Precinct 3

Ray S. Daniel was appointed to succeed John H. Winters as county commissioner for Precinct 3. Judge Ernest Northcutt administered the oath and Daniel will serve until a successor is chosen in the next general election on November 2, 1944. Daniel, a Deaf Smith County native and West Texas State College graduate, has lived in Amarillo since 1926 and worked in insurance.

Col Raley Reinstated as Amarillo Field Commander

Colonel Edward Raley returns as commanding officer at Amarillo Army Air Field replacing Colonel John K.
