Bruce Fowler and Raymond Gill escaped Huntsville prison to wed in Wichita Falls, Fowler saying a girl waiting to marry him drove the stunt. They were recaptured and later held to the grand jury on an auto theft plea after an examining trial in Paris, Texas.
Ellery Roberts 24 and Finas Goree 24 remain at large after stealing a second auto and fleeing a Texas prison escape. They slugged a guard and a loyal, tied them to a tree, then abducted L A Kucera and Gladys James, forced Kucera to drive to Beaumont, and held up H E Wilkins family to take his sedan.
The airplane Chicago We Will, chasing the 17 and a half day St Louis Robin record, made its second failed attempt in two days by landing at Municipal Airport after four hours and 28 minutes aloft. A prior attempt the day before lasted three hours and 35 minutes.
Dorothy Elizabeth Mitchell a 15 year old Conway Texas resident died at home after a mad dog bite two weeks earlier. The bite caused immediate paralysis leading to death despite rabies serum treatment. She was a Conway school graduate survived by her parents and two sisters. Funeral services were held at Conway church with burial in Claude cemetery.
Fire damages the First Baptist church educational building, last January’s church destruction haunting the scene. Dr. J. Frank Norris, pastor and national figure, has faced arson charges in past trials. Investigators find gasoline cans but no definite origin. police guard the crowd as debris removal continues.
Dr C C Selecman president of Southern Methodist University Dallas opens a revival at Polk Street Methodist Church with a sermon linking revival to cause and effect. He urges church members to pray for revival starting with themselves and outlines sermons for Sunday focusing on prayer the Christian home and backsliders.
The West Texas Auxiliary of the County and District Clerks' Association of Texas opened its seventh annual convention in the district court room. J. W. Grigg presided as association president. A small opening session gathered delegates with host Miss Allease Skillman and Potter County Clerk Ted Blackburn anticipating a larger turnout.
London dispatches report China states no open clashes with Soviet forces on the Manchurian border while confirming engagements and Soviet patrol incursions near Manchuki. Reports say a six hour battle near Manchuki and Soviet gunboats firing on Chinese vessels with three damaged.
The Spokane Sun God on a Spokane to New York nonstop flight was refueled at Mills Field San Francisco at 6 05 a m by Lieut Nick Mamer and Art Walker. The note from Mamer said the plane reached San Francisco Bay by 3 a m and pilots struggled to locate the airport. It reported an average speed around 100 miles per hour from Spokane.
James Horace Alderman, a rum runner, faces execution by hanging tomorrow in the naval seaplane hangar at the Fort Lauderdale coast guard base. He was convicted for the August 1927 slayings of Coast Guardsmen Sydney C. Sanderlin and Victor A. Lamby after a pursuit from the Bahamas.
Storms threaten the Graf Zeppelin as it follows a polar route above latitude 60 toward Tokio from Friedrichshafen. Moscow reports the airship passed the Ural base near Pozhevaka and heads across Siberia via Yenisseisk and Yakutsk toward Khabarovsk, toward the Far East.
After seven hours of deliberation Mrs Levi P Stallworth of Amarillo was acquitted of the May 13 slaying of Plainview resident Mrs Grace Morrison. She testified self defense saying Morrison aimed a gun as Stallworth claimed to leave her husband alone. Stallworth shed tears at the verdict and thanked jurors.
Minneapolis police expand a massive search for a youth believed to be the killer of 12 year old Dorothy Aune. Inspector Crummy notes similarities to the Edward Hickman case and widens the investigation to suspects and a missing 22 year old man near the crime scene.
