Washington reports that the world celebrates a victorious halt to Japan’s empire as Allied forces shift from war to peace. Yet new challenges loom, with restoration and postwar planning starting to surface across allied nations after World War II.
Amarillo celebrates Japan's surrender with gasoline rationing lifted and stores open while post office services pause aside from mailbox mail. President Truman orders armistice terms through MacArthur under Allied control and warns of a hard postwar future as occupations begin.
Washington reports the Army reduced its draft demand and will demobilize up to 5.5 million men over 12 to 18 months. The Navy announced plans to release between 1.5 million and 2.5 million personnel in the same period.
Pantex Ordnance will stop all production immediately as part of post surrender shutdown steps. Maj. R. M. Smith ordered the plant to begin decontamination and decommissioning while key staff will keep a standby crew for several months. H. F. Washington dispatch reports Gen Douglas MacArthur likely arrange swift release of Lt Gen Jonathan Wainwright and other American prisoners as surrender terms to Japan are set in Manila. Wainwright, a Corregidor hero, is listed among the 16,669 Americans held by Japan, with most military prisoners in Japan and civilians in camps across Asia.
