Col Ernest O Thompson will build a fifty room Thompson Inn in Panhandle to be two stories high in mission style. Construction may start soon with projected cost between 50000 and 60000 financed by 35000 bond issue by Panhandle businessmen and remaining by Thompson.
Congressman Dan Anthony of Leavenworth Kansas visits Amarillo to discuss investments and stockholding in the Amarillo Globe. He edits the Leavenworth Times and is from a newspaper family. aunt Susan B. Anthony helped spark woman suffrage. He expects Amarillo to grow and plans a September return for prairie chicken shooting.
Washington reports winter wheat planted this fall will total about 42 919 000 acres based on August 1 intentions from 19 000 farmers. The 7 6 percent increase equals roughly 2 986 000 acres more than last fall, shaping this year’s probable total.

President Coolidge opened the Republican campaign by formally accepting the nomination and outlining his platform. He pledged government economy tax reductions armament limits and agricultural stabilization while praising honest government and enforcement of laws. He plans a two week vacation with his family at his Plymouth Vermont home.
Wilcox test north of Pampa collapses as drill stem is pulled. Timber is ordered for a new derrick to start today and accelerate completion of Wilson No. 1 in Section 95 four miles north of Pampa. The well struck the big line at 2 506 feet and shows potential as a major producer.
Grapeland Texas August 15 Engineer Bill Cook was killed when International Great Northern passenger number 5 derailed south of Grapeland at about 4 am. No passengers were injured. A switch was believed jolted open by the train’s movement. Cook hailed from Palestine.
The upcoming September 22 to 28 exposition will feature bronzed and sober Indian war riors with squaws, tepees, and a war dance. Buffalo from the Goodnight ranch may join the program, pending feasibility and safety. Mike Hollander plans to secure buffalo and recruit an Indian tribe for the fair parade and pageant.
Mobilization of national guard units at their home stations will be the main element of defense day preparations for September 12. Texas participation details will be announced tomorrow from the adjutant general's department, with Governor Neff withholding plans until then.
Mrs. B. F. Talley of Miami died at 7 o'clock this morning after months at Northwest Texas Hospital. Funeral services are set for 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in Miami.
George Lindsay of the Panhandle Laundry, proclaimed the Merry Old Bachelor, will broadcast a ten minute talk from WFAA Dallas News Journal at 8:20. He chose Amarillo and the Panhandle as his subject after Dallas station managers urged a talk during his Dallas visit. Radio parties planned for 8:30 in Amarillo to hear Lindsay.
Fifteen tremors rocked Tokio with the heaviest shaking north of the city. Kukushima a city of 49,000 reported damage and Chiba near Tokyo Bay saw one house destroyed. Choshi reported telephone service suspended as seismographs recorded eighty temnmates.
An all Panhandle rally supporting Felix D Robertson in the Democratic primary run off against Miriam Ferguson will be at 8 pm Thursday August 21 in the Municipal auditorium with Robertson as the main speaker. Local supporters anticipate an overflow crowd and promise a band and other features. Robertson spoke here ten days ago and will return for the event.
At a cabinet meeting and a following conference with party leaders, Berlin agreed to try preventing a breakdown of the London conference. The French pledge to evacuate the Ruhr within a year should not be bluntly rejected.
Dr. W. S. Sutton retired UT president told the American Business club that world salvation comes through business, not grand talk, and urged UT independence from state politics as a people’s university. The club plans a parade float for the Amarillo Tri-State exposition. Harley Sadler and guests offered a program, noting 75 percent of gate money returns to the town. George Truitt led a brief parliamentary session.
F. K. West of El Reno Oklahoma visits Amarillo to organize a state display for the Tri-State fair. He oversees all Oklahoma exhibits and confirms a 36 foot frontage with 25 feet for agricultural products. The remaining space will showcase other state resources and the display aims to be educational.
A convoy of Amarillo residents toured 21 miles east and southeast to inspect 3 000 acres of cotton near Potter and Randall counties. They found fields averaging up to three quarters of a bale per acre on 1 400 acres owned by Robert Glenn, plus 600 acres owned by Claude Le Neveu and other holdings. Estimates place Glenn’s crop at 600 700 bales valued around 125 a bale, with ginning fees in Amarillo. Frost timing and favorable season extend the cotton window, while kafir corn and milo maize crops show strong potential.
The day saw a high of 85 and a low of 68, compared with 98 and 67 a year ago. The forecast calls for generally fair and cooler conditions tonight and tomorrow, continuing the mild pattern.
