Absentee voting for the second primary to be held August 23 began yesterday. Ballots must be returned by August 19. John A. Stalcup says ballots arrived late but voting may be heavy for the runoff. Mail ballots are limited to those who left the city. others must vote at the clerk's office.
Eugene Woods alias Jack Woods principal of the Lamar ward school in Pampa is jailed in Potter county in lieu of 5000 bond on a federal counterfeiting charge. He borrowed 1000 while under arrest from Pampa National Bank and had 10 cashier's checks for 100 in his shoes. He told officers the counterfeiting was an experiment but authorities say he passed some money in Fort Worth.
Attorney General Robert Lee Bobbitt arrives for an 8 15 p m speech on the court house lawn to defend his record. He says he will counter his opponent and Jim Ferguson with new facts from San Antonio papers. Judge S A L Morgan will introduce him as the Amarillo Bar Association backs his candidacy and WDAG will broadcast.
Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine extended the world endurance refueling flight record aboard the Greater St. Louis monoplane at Lambert Field St Louis to 575 hours surpassing the 553 hour mark set by the Hunters in Chicago. An oil firm agreed to pay 106 per hour until the record was topped by 70 hours as night storms tested watchers.
In New Orleans on August 14, Mayor T S Walmsley rejects Gov Huey P Long claims of widespread gambling. He says there are no gambling casinos and accuses Long of using militia threats as campaign cover after Attorney General Percy Saint closed houses of change in Jefferson and St Bernard.
The R-100 dirigible carried 44 crew and 13 passengers as it crossed the Atlantic eastward from Montreal toward Cardington. Despite a dead motor, officials predicted a 50 hour crossing to set a new record, aided by favorable winds and a cooperative crew assisting fuel pumps.
Rain swept into the Hoover drouth conference as dry state governors pressed for immediate relief. Talks with government officials began ahead of a presidential meeting, focusing on extended credit to farmers to sustain operations for a new crop year amid widespread drought across Indiana Ohio Kentucky Tennessee Missouri and West Virginia. Governor Leslie of Indiana urged swift funding, warning farmers have little to pledge for loans.
Ross S. Sterling and party received a tumultuous reception in Amarillo as he campaigned for the first primary. August 22 crowd filled Municipal Auditorium and pledged support against Fergusonism. Sterling thanked supporters and praised attendance at Hedley Clarendon Pampa and Borger before Amarillo.

Three men identified as gangsters were killed on a rural road near Wildwood Amusement Park in St Paul Minnesota. The victims include Sammy Stein alias Heckel linked to Kansas City underworld cases and Frank Coleman a former chauffeur for Sally Weisman. A third man, Butch Myers, was found unconscious and died at St Johns Hospital. Investigators searched for George Hugo Moran as a possible headquarters figure.
Mayor Ernest Thompson defended the 1914 Ordinance No. 268 allowing police to arrest without a warrant when a credible report claims a felony or breach of the peace and suspects may flee if delayed. The mayor said the ordinance was fully within legal rights and effectively locked up the city’s police powers.
