Nazi authorities in Berlin announced a nationwide registration of men women and children from five to seventy to support homeland defense. The "People's Register" runs Aug 13 to 19 with Jews registering Aug 20 to Sept 2, exemptions listed for foreigners and military personnel.
An informed Tokyo source describes intense Japan debate over a potential Rome Berlin alliance. Nationalist officers threaten cabinet members while leaders oppose a full alliance and favor only a limited anti Soviet pact. Factors include US trade denial and Britain France Russia talks shaping cabinet and emperor views.
In Jackson Mississippi the Democratic nomination race tightens between Hat tiesburg's Paul Burney Johnson and Jackson's Martin Senet Conner as about 20 percent of the 300000 votes counted shows Johnson with a slim lead and a clear edge over six opponents. Both advance to the August 29 runoff.
Mr. Collman predicts relief from the cold as a cool snap and showery cycle pass. He forecasts today will be fair and warmer with partly cloudy conditions tomorrow. Last night’s low was 52 degrees, well above freezing, and a high near 80 degrees is expected today.

Tze Chin Lu, Chinese consul general, planned to issue a statement on Wong Youn’s murder and related developments.
In New Orleans on August 9 the federal probe of jury tampering in the Abraham L. Shushan income tax evasion trial showed signs of a breakthrough. U S attorney general spokesman O John Rogge said the investigation was proceeding even more favorably than expected. Shushan had been acquitted of income tax charges in October 1935, shortly before the assassination of Senator Huey P Long and the government dropped charges against other Long lieutenants.
In 1908 Maxwell car and six tourers from Amarillo sought shelter near Dumas during a storm on a journey to Colorado. The party endured rough roads, improvised fuel and repairs, reaching Colorado Springs after four days. the Maxwell later failed near Trinidad and was rebuilt in Amarillo. Seller Lon Sellars remains fond of long auto trips though not in the Maxwell.
Camden detectives probe possible tie between the seven arrested in a Camden counterfeit ring and the 17 year old minister's daughter Wanda Dworecki's death. Police review letters found at the girl's home as part of the investigation.
Esperanza Rafael, 24, bedridden for three months before birth, says constant viewing of Christ and Virgin Mary pictures caused her baby Maria Corazon to be born with the heart outside the body. Doctors say the child is in good condition apart from the exposed heart and may live with surgery to relocate the heart.
In Denver two men William A. Lewis and Avery Eavis underwent a rare cornea transplant using a hair fine silk thread. The operation moved a three eighths inch cornea section from Davis’s blind left eye to Lewis’s left eye. Doctors warned any movement could undo the delicate graft and harm the cornea.
A million dollar cargo of movie stars flies to New York and Atlantic City to press a union dispute. President Ralph Morgan says a loss in Atlantic City could trigger a strike in studios. The quarrel centers on the American Federation of Actors seeking independence from the stagehands union.
Weather outlook for Amarillo and West Texas calls for fair and warmer conditions tonight and Thursday with partly cloudy skies. New Mexico areas remain partly cloudy with little temperature change. a few thundershowers may dip southeast tonight. temperatures ranged from 52 to 77 in the last 24 hours, with noon at 76.
In Lansing on August 9, E. J. Parr, director of drugs and drug stores on the state pharmacy board, urged a salary cut from 5000 to 4000 dollars. Auditor General Vernon Brown questioned the request, then agreed to the reduction, noting Parr previously held the post at 4000 dollars.
