Beginning Monday the Globe invites readers to submit 900 to 1200 word columns as pinch hitters for Old Tack. Ten top columns will win 10 each, and all submissions enter a contest with a 100 prize for the winner to write a full week. Submissions due by Aug 20 to Wes Izzard care of the Globe.
A column of notices seeks a home for white clay topsoil, a reader asks for the return of a 1934 boy’s class ring with initials T J S, a family reports a missing black chow with white chest and feet spots, and several individuals seek part time work offering ironing, housekeeping and child care services.

Body held at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.
Sergeant Set R. Short vows to form Amarillo’s first flying cadet unit of 20 men. He notes prior aluminium donations for national defense and urges local volunteers, announcing recruitment at Room 12 in the Post Office Building.
