The Louisiana state board of pardons recommended commuting the death sentence of John Smidt of Vidalia for the murder of his stepdaughter. Smidt, slated for execution on August 12, was deemed insane by Dr. John Thomas and other alienists, prompting pleas for clemency.
Tonight and Wednesday thunderstorms expected with temperature extremes of 79 and 64. Local readings compare this day to last year with highs near 94 and lows around 69, while hourly values show morning 65 at 7 am and 67 at 8 am rising to 79 by noon and 79 in the afternoon.
A gun battle 40 miles east of Fort Lauderdale left two government men dead and four wounded. Coast guardman Sidney Sanderlin was killed, and Robert K. Webster died during the raid on the 50 foot motor boat Z-13997 which carried 160 cases of liquor. Aboard the captured vessel Horace Alderman killed Sanderlin and wounded Victor Lamby before surrendering to guardsmen.
A mysterious device described as an infernal machine was found in an alley near Angelus Temple. It included a bottle labeled nitro glycerine, a razor blade transformer, and an unplugged alarm clock. Police analyzed castor oil from the device as part of the investigation.
United Press reports an unconfirmed plan that Charles A. Levine and Maurice Drouhin will start tonight from Paris to New York in the Bellanca Columbia. A Franco German air race across the Atlantic seems assured as Levine and Drouhin sign a contract, with other pilots and planes preparing in Dessau for the westward flight.
Police recovered about 2500 bottles of beer in two weekend raids. A white man and a Black man were turned over to federal authorities on charges of possession and fate, stemming from the raids.
Flood waters pour through the Pendleton and Medford levee breaks on the south side of the Arkansas river below Pine Bluff for the fourth time this year. The Arkansas Democrat was advised by R. R. Rice or Warner, secretary of the Arkansas flood commission.
Mary Josephine Waite a 24 year old nurse on the United States shipping board steamer American Trader was charged in Thames Police court with murdering Lewis Fisher the refrigerating engineer by pouring acid into his mouth while he slept. The crime is alleged to have been committed off Bishop's Light near the Scilly Islands. Extradi tion proceedings for removal to the United States may be pursued.
The August forecast from the agriculture department puts this year’s cotton crop at 13 492 000 bales of 500 pounds each, with boll weevil infestation about three times higher than last year. The forecast notes this is four and a half million below last year’s output and discusses state conditions and area harvested.
Eddie Johnson defeated Dick Willetts to capture the Indian Hills Invitation golf title after beating Sammy Taylor in the semi final. Johnson won the final on the fourteenth green five up and four to play. Willetts had the best long game, while both players struggled with putting. Doug Heerring forfeited the semi final due to travel, and club owner Walter Sikes helped organize the event. Tridian Hills will hold a sweepstakes tournament at Country Club after the invitation.
County Attorney Leo Sparks prepared papers for an injunction against Club Royale known as Spanish Gardens northeast of the city. The building was destroyed by a mysterious fire at 2 a.m., forcing proprietor John Shamblin and Mrs. Shamblin to flee. The club, outside city limits, had no water to fight the blaze, and Sparks halted filing after the loss.
Wheat led the surge in Chicago and Kansas City markets as frost warnings from Canada triggered sharp gains. Prices rose about six cents a bushel in Chicago with widespread trading. Kansas City saw wheat futures jump 4 1/4 to 5 1/2 cents, September at 134 1/4. Corn futures also climbed on crop deterioration outlooks, with September up to 107 1/8.
Colonel Haines outlined the Boards of City Development plan focusing on agricultural growth, better highways, city beautification, and attracting industries. S.R.B. Steel spoke on aiding underprivileged children. West Texas Gas line construction footage was shown and Mrs. Robert Wilson and daughter performed musical numbers.
Extra guards were posted in Houston after an anonymous tip warned of a bomb at city hall and federal buildings within 48 hours. Suspected radicals and Sacco and Vanzetti sympathizers were noted in the case. In Boston the Massachusetts Supreme Court rejected a petition for a writ of habeas corpus and a writ of error for Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Justice George A. Sanderson ruled the petitions fall outside the court’s province. William G. Thompson testified about alleged prejudice by Trial Judge Webster Thayer against Sacco and Vanzetti defense counsel.
Half a million workers in New York were asked to strike at 10 am to protest the Sacco and Vanzetti execution. Labor groups affiliated with the AFL and Socialists were to lead the action with smaller roles from the IWW and Communist groups. Estimates of overall participation reached about 850 thousand Italian organizations plus 100 thousand others, with 60 thousand from communist and IWW bodies. Investigations into the Friday subway bombings continued with several arrests but no definite suspects. Detective Christopher Kelley led the inquiry.
Dr George Butt attorney general of Porto Rico was mentioned as a possible appointee of President Coolidge to govern the Philippine Islands to succeed General Wood who died Sunday in Austin on August 5.
Potter County commissioners set the current year’s tax rate at 76 cents per $100 valuation, down five cents from last year despite an 18 cent levy for road bonds. The distribution covers general, jury, road and bridge, courthouse warrants, hospital, park, old road bond, and new bond funds. A Packard sedan tied to an Italian resident was spotted near the Interborough subway blast scene in Boston.
Demonstrations in support of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti intensify across the United States, Europe, and South America. New York leaders pledge to mobilize 600,000 workers against sending the pair to the electric chair in Charleston, Massachusetts. Paris London Munich Boston and other cities see protests with arrests but no major disorder. Public buildings receive guard protection as authorities tighten security worldwide.
Seven years after the South Braintree payroll robbery and killings of paymaster Frederick Parmenter and guard Alessandro Berardelli, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested on a Brookton street car. Sacco, a shoe factory worker, and Vanzetti, a fish peddler, were noted radicals who fled to Mexico during the war.
