Washington officials believe Tokyo or another Japanese war city could be next in line for atomic bombing. Tokyo reported heavy destruction in Hiroshima with many houses demolished and fires in several areas after the atomic raid. Washington confirmed one bomb was dropped as Tokyo questioned the weapon’s lasting power while Japan vowed counter measures and condemned the attack as barbaric.
Washington reports the new atomic weapon multiplies destruction by about 3000 times. An 800 B-29 raid on Japan would have carried seven ton loads of explosives each, yielding the blasting effect of 2,800,000 planes with TNT. The Hiroshima blast equaled roughly 20,000 tons of TNT, about 3000 times a seven ton old bomb.

Maj. Richard Ira Bong America's ace of aces is killed in a jet P-80 Shooting Star explosion during a test flight at Lockheed air terminal in Burbank California. He downed 40 Japanese planes in over 500 combat hours and was 24 years old. His body was found near the burning aircraft after a parachute partially opened.
