An official of the CIO United Auto Workers said the union has a new proposal to avert a strike of 107 000 Ford Motor Co employees. UAW-CIO vice president Richard T Leonard did not reveal terms and said it would be offered at a last ditch negotiating session today in a telegram to Richard T.
In Batavia Java Aug 4 the Indonesian republic announced a cease-fire to all troops in response to the UN Security Council demand for a halt to fighting. Jogjakarta broadcast the order after 8 PM local time, while Dutch forces claimed a midnight cease-fire effective immediately. Both sides reported communications disruptions complicating enforcement.
The United States opposes Hungary and Romania for UN admission, citing grave doubts about their ability to meet UN charter obligations and concerns over Romania's human rights record. The Security Council committee rejected a Soviet bid to shelve Austrian and ex-enemy nationals, while the U S urged Italian and Austrian bids.
Elliott Roosevelt testified before a Senate committee promising to provide the complete facts about his link to wartime aircraft contracts with Howard Hughes. He defended his conduct amid questions of entertainment influencing procurement, noting intimate ties to the wartime commander in chief. The hearing drew a large crowd as prosecutors and defense clashed over Hughes spending and contract actions.
In Detroit on August 4 CIO workers walked out due to intense heat, idling over 3,500 employees. Briggs Manufacturing shut Connor plant with 1,943 workers sent home. Meldrum plant laid off 500. Packard halted final assembly, 800 idled. Chrysler reported 300 core-room workers quit but no output loss. Temperatures reached 93 degrees.

Second prize of $3 goes to Paul Anderson of Amarillo for locating the check’s owner after a $5,000 check appeared. A third prize of $2 goes to Mrs. J. H. Sanders for a tip about a stray 22 caliber bullet entering a River Road home. Checks mailed. Roller Palace skating alert closes the item.
In Minneapolis on August 4 authorities freed two brothers and a sister, aged 42, 38, and 35, from cages and a bare attic where they had been confined by their 72 year old mother, Mrs. Bertha Anderson. Police will resume questioning to determine charges. The mother claimed a right to control her children.
Walter Robert Bradley, 4 months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Bradley of 509 North Taylor, is described as strong and precocious. Born March 21 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, he holds on to a wooden rod, coos, cries, and begins to crawl while his Canadian war-bride mother weighs 93 pounds. The Bradleys married August 22, 1943, in Brandon Manitoba after meeting there during Mr. Bradley’s military service. they later settled in Amarillo where he works as an apprentice machinist.
Shanghai weather officials announced the city lay in the direct path of a typhoon moving across the Pacific toward the Northwest, prompting warnings and monitoring.
The freighter Ogna sailing from New York with 2300 tons of ammonium nitrate was ordered to depart Le Havre by port authorities for an undisclosed destination. A similar cargo-laden ship exploded last week nearby.
United States Senator Carl A. Hatch traveled on the Grand Canyon Limited through Amarillo en route to a several week rest at his country home near Clovis New Mexico. He was greeted at the Santa Fe station by Harriett Hatch eight, and Georgette Stokes granddaughter of Judge W N Stokes. Stokes attended the visit and Hatch planned a six week Europe and Asia tour as a member of the Voice of America information committee after leaving New York City September 5. Harriett wore levis to greet her grandfather.
Crosby County authorities charge 33 year old George Holland with murder in the death of Crosbyton Sheriff J J Pierce. Holland was arrested in Amarillo and brought to Lubbock County jail. Pierce was slain in a vacant lot in Ralls while on a raid target. Sheriff Pierce had told his family he planned a raid and had the gun used by the killer.
George Holland, 33, described as a Negro heTo, was arrested by Amarillo police within hours of a radio broadcast about the murder of Crosby County Sheriff J. J. Pierce. He was found at 1704 North Adams and claimed he fled Ralls after hearing the law found whiskey. He faces a three-year perjury sentence and a dishonorable Army discharge. He was transported to Lubbock by Sheriff Grady Harrist and Ranger Norville Redwine.
