Gov. Ross Sterling urged the Texas Legislature to replace the existing 2 percent oil tax with a 2 cent per barrel levy to raise state revenues, warning he would veto any bill restricting production to market demand. He proposed a conservation commission, urged appointive control, and called for faster trial of conservation lawsuits and broader pipeline access. He warned against shifting burdens from the able to pay.

Austin August 3. Bankers of Texas press for careful thought before forcing compulsory cotton acreage reductions as farmers and officials meet to address the cotton price crisis. Gov Ross Sterling chairs a conference with future talks for cotton state governors. M H Gossett of the Federal Land Bank of Houston calls the step heroic and would not push legislation now. J W Hoopes agrees, linking the crisis to the global economic downturn. Gossett says agriculture is not bankrupt despite low prices. Consultations continue.
In Aransas Pass Texas Newton Yardberry a barber faces murder charges in the death of 18 year old Dorothy Symons whose body was found in a sand and seaweed filled shallow grave. A coroner's jury ruled death by strangulation and Yardberry scheduled for an examining trial Tuesday after being last seen with Symons at Linton.
Roswell New Mexico Aug 3 The incident left two peace officers dead when James Welch 46 a farmer 20 miles south of Roswell shot and killed Rufe Dunahoo chief deputy sheriff of Chaves County. Sheriff John Peck was present Welch is jailed without bond on first degree murder charge. Donahoo 62 had lived in Roswell 50 years and served as a Chaves County peace officer for over four decades.
Hundreds gathered Sunday at the Masterson family home in Brenham to honor R. B. Masterson Sr., 77, a pioneer cattleman. Funeral rites were conducted by Rev. Moylan Bird and Dr. F. A. Foster, with interment at Llano Cemetery under N. S. Griggs & Sons’ direction.

Pittsburgh notified that Pennsylvania crude oil prices rose for the second time this week with a 15 cent hike on several grades. New prices show Pennsylvania grade at 1.70 with National Transit Lines, 1.55 at Southwest Pennsylvania Lines, 1.45 at Eureka Lines, and 1.30 at Buckeye Lines, while other grades remained unchanged.

Oklahoma Governor Murray calmly moves toward issuing a prorated wells shutdown order with a test case on state rights for the Supreme Court. He says time is not a factor and predicts an order by tomorrow or Wednesday. He had warned crude buyers to raise prices above 42 to 50 cents to at least a dollar per barrel. He accuses large buyers and operators of ousting smaller producers through vertical integration.
Rain and clouds delayed Western Air Express from Denver, landing at English Field at 1 15 PM, two hours forty minutes late. Amarillo's Dallas-bound American Airways plane was held to await connections but departed after the Denver aircraft was found down in Pueblo. C R Smith of American Airways left Amarillo for Tulsa after inaugural Fort Worth trip.
London reports Premier David Lloyd George aged 68 shows improvement today while recuperating from an operation for kidney trouble. His condition is described as satisfactory and progression toward recovery noted by medical staff.
Seventeen people died violently in Texas over the weekend with eight auto accidents and fatalities from shooting drowning burning and strangulation. Names include J T Keene and family of Burleson plus others near San Benito Beaumont Houston Cleburne Spur and Dallas area.
Cleveland pilot Ralph C. Wensinger from the airport weather bureau recounted flying into a thunder-head to explore its interior. He described being tossed at 165 mph, crossed by strong updrafts, nearly ejected, then regaining control and landing safely after a 45 degree exit from the cloud.
Heavy weekend rains drenched the Panhandle and parts of New Mexico and Oklahoma, with 1.862 inches total in Amarillo and up to 3 inches near Hereford to Clovis. Roads were intermittently impassable, buses were delayed, and highways to Dalhart and Dumas remained travelable with chains. Unsettled weather was forecast tonight and Tuesday.
The Wheeler grand jury investigating the Saturday night shooting that killed John Belflower, 27, is delayed by muddy roads as Judge W R Ewing and DA Raymond Allred head toward the scene. Melvin Walker, 22, held without bond, faces investigation into Belflower's death amid a family feud over Belflower's daughter. Belflower’s funeral was set for Monday at the Shamrock Methodist Church.
Wickersham Commission reports Federal District Courts increasingly handle police court offenses in Connecticut for three years ending June 30 1930. Minor prohibition cases rose to 81 percent of the criminal docket while courts remain expeditious.
The Canyon district court, with Judge Henry 8 Bishop, District Attorney Edw W Thomerson, and Court Reporter Norman Minter, convened this morning. Randall County district court also opened its three weeks term, with both civil and criminal dockets expected to require full attention.
A mother Dora Wilson 43 and her children Tom 4 and Eulalee 14 died when an eastbound train carrying National Guard troops to Little Rock struck their automobile two miles north of Alix Arkansas. The father was seriously injured. The crash occurred yesterday.

John Taylor Johnson City Tennessee reports that 83 year old former Tennessee governor Uncle Alf Taylor was told by his physician he has a fighting chance to live after undergoing kidney operation on Friday. Dr Harry D Miller announced the news.
Edison shows marked improvement in his condition at West Orange New Jersey. Dr. Hubert Howe, his personal physician, said the 84 year old inventor’s condition is satisfactory but danger remains. Charles Edison reported his father in good spirits and chipper, though the balance could tip with any setback.
The Community Chest’s 5,000 bushel wheat goal remains unmet with about 600 more bushels needed. Mason King of the Chamber of Commerce urges reaching the goal today. The Great West Mill and Elevator Company will mill the wheat for free once funded, then store it until this winter for distribution to Amarillo families in need.
Mayor Ernest O. Thompson has returned from Austin after appearing before the State Highway Commission on Saturday in the Panhandle highway development program.
Harv Jones and Reginald L Robbins from Fort Worth Texas attempt a nonstop Seattle to Fairbanks flight. Their plane landed in Fort Worth after 22 hours behind the Post Gatty record. They planned to continue but the trim issue ended the leg early. They aimed to regain time in Siberia with Pangborn and Herndon in a world flight chase.
