Commissioners tentatively schedule a bond election for August 19 to finance Northwest Texas Hospital improvements. A $112,000 federal grant is earmarked with a $145,000 bond call, potentially combining the hospital and county coliseum questions if approved.
Harry Walters, a director of Old Southwest Days, told the Lions Club today that the outdoor set will be the largest in the country with distinctive heating effects. He urged more actors for the Will Rogers Highway 66 celebration and invited members to join the cast. Roy Diven and Dirck Stahl provided music. Clay Thornton urged Cowboys regalia and a cattle train trip to Dalhart next Tuesday with the club pledging a filled car.
Matagorda Texas suffered the worst flood in its history as water rose eight inches to several feet along the Colorado River mouth. Officials warned the crest was not yet reached with two more inches expected, and residents relied on motorboats and skiffs to deliver groceries as road traffic failed.
The German seaplane Nordwind on an experimental flight from the United States to the Azores collided with a yacht at Horta Azores, injuring none. The craft suffered nose and wing damage while the yacht lost its mast. Nordwind had flown from Port Washington Long Island in 14 hours arriving at noon.
In La Grande Oregon on August 2 14 five youths died when their car hit a culvert west of Union and caught fire. Identified were Berton Bushman 15 Clinton Bushman 17 John Foley 17 Leroy Foster 18 Robert Myrick 13 all residents of Perry six miles west of La Grande.
Four days after leaving Green River Utah two University of Michigan women Dr Elizabeth Clover and Miss Louise Jotter completed a dangerous boat trip down the Colorado River in Boulder City Nevada Their final leg included Norman R Nevills guide W C Gibson photographer and Loren Bell and Del Reid as companions.
Ford Motor Co dealers and sales managers from the Panhandle territory will meet this evening at 7 30 o clock at the Herring Hotel Mack Mechnistry zone representative of the Panhandle territory will lead the session Approximately 20 dealers and sales managers are expected to attend.
In Longview three Grayson County fugitives were indicted convicted and sentenced within 75 minutes after gun battles with Gregg County officers. Jack Geesling Arthur Whit ten and Kid Willis received 60 year prison terms each for their roles in the shootings.
King George VI makes a rare arrival by rowboat to his domain at Southwold England after disembarking from the yacht Victoria and Albert. The event marks a notable, intimate greeting with coastal onlookers as the royal party continues its visit.

Ray Shiffiett of Wichita Falls uses a three motor Stinson to offer rides over Amarillo for one dollar per person and trips to Palo Duro Canyon at one dollar. James Dickerson a pioneer cattleman who first came to the Plains in 1879 died suddenly at his Amarillo home. Survivors include wife Mrs. J T Minekerson four sons W W Dickerson Hereford Lawrence Dickerson Wichita Falls J W Dickerson Centralia WA John D Dickerson St Louis MO and two brothers. His body lies in state at Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Chapel awaiting funeral arrangements.
Dunking at the Will Rogers Memorial Pageant drew a large crowd as workers dunked five men including Dick Hennessey from the Texas Company Arlie Speer of Speers Drug Store and Gene Kline of Star Lumber Company. Spectators captured the moment as the dipping season runs through August 17.
Amarillo civic groups charter five cattle cars for Old Southwest Days XIT reunion in Dalhart. May Thornton of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce says the American Business Club sold 40 tickets and called for more, with many wives joining. Kiwanis and Lions also chartered cars. Brakemen listed include Berthlot, Nattey, Cox, Hammock, Blackburn, Boxwell, Milner, Farley, Florey and Burke. Over 150 tickets sold on opening day.
Hollywood reports film dance director Leroy Prinz studied college annuals and declared a sad fact there are no beautiful co-eds. He found only one Southern college girl who might be considered beautiful, but her hairstyle and dress fell short of screen standards.

Julia Dean will teach music at Central Junior High Schora. Dorothy Ewing joins Tyler Street School English. Beatrice Roberts to art at Humphreys Highland. Amber Darnall to secretarial work at Sam Houston Junior High. A bus purchase, to support school trips, is being studied.
In Starr County the Democratic executive committee ruled there was no legal vote in La Crulla during July primaries. They voided returns after a dispute that began on election day when 40 to 50 armed men disrupted the poll and ousted precinct judge David Longoria, replacing him with Rene Vera.
Halettsville, Aug 2. Farmer Emil Onheiser was charged with assault to murder after firing at his son Fred, 24, who he said was annointing his fate with facial cream. Fred claimed he was fooling, but Emil insisted he wasn’t.
Leo H. Bury scoutmaster of a St. Louis troop is visiting Amarillo this week as the guest of A. A. Graham national commissioner of the Amarillo Area Council of Boy Scouts.
A building permit valued at 5500 was issued to T Spector for a brick veneer home and garage at 2423 Ong Street by city inspector Wallace Hazlewood with B B Brading as contractor. Washington data shows July deficit over 440 million dollars in the start of the 1939 fiscal year due to increased recovery and ordinary government spending.
Three Borger residents were hurt when their car overturned on the Pampa Amarillo road near English airport late last night. D F Phillips suffered a dislocated vertebrae while Bob and his wife Benge sustained non serious injuries. The Benges received minor lacerations and back sprain and all were treated and released from St Anthony's Hospital.
In Kansas a tight primary battle unfolds with Clyde M. Reed taking an initial edge over Gerald B. Winrod for the U S Senate nomination. Early county results show Reed ahead two to one, while cross accusations fly over use of federal and state funds and pension lists amid a bitter intra party fight.
Japanese forces reported capturing Susung 30 miles north of Kiukiang and preparing to strike Hwangmei. Chinese troops were retreating from Hwangmei as fierce fighting raged near Sunichang ten miles south of Kiukiane. A Japanese spokesman cited a strong north bank highway to Hankow facilitating operations.

Twenty three persons were sentenced to death and others given long prison terms at mass trials on high treason and espionage charges in Madrid. Of 194 defendants only 25 were acquitted, while 16 were held for further investigation and others received six to 30 year prison terms.

A pink and white decorated cake graced the table and guests included Mesdames John H Nichols Bari Curry Irene Williams Dude Coleman Ollie Williams Byron Steele Miss Elizabeth Lilly Wesley Williams and the hostess. Moving pictures were made after the meal.
