Santa Fe reported 29 045 carloadings for the week ending July 29 up from 21 295 in the same week of 1943. Connections brought in 13 469 cars versus 11 546 last year. Total cars moved reached 42 514 versus 32 841. The system handled 43 115 idle cars in the preceding week.
William Roscoe Rich of Amarillo has enlisted in the U S Merchant Marine and will be sent to Catalina Island Training Station at Avalon California. He begins a three to six month training course to qualify as a merchant marine unit. Rich, 28, is the son of Mr and Mrs Will Rich of the Rich Dairy and enlisted June 20, 1944.
Dr. G. P. Lewis, Seattle eye ear nose throat specialist, spoke to a sectional group at Amarillo Osteopathic Hospital during the second week of a post graduate course and surgical conference. He urged improved prevention and treatment of industrial eye injuries and praised Drs. Cradit and Vick for sustaining the Amarillo program with three daily sessions.

An appeal for volunteers for the United States Merchant Marine was issued by Ensign A. F. Thomson Denver regional enrolling office. He urged men of all ages to volunteer as the draft class limits restrict 17 to 26 year olds unless in specific classifications. Recruits will be training at Catalina Island Training Station Avalon California for three to six months and should contact Thomson for details.
