The Highway Committee planned a meeting for today but postponed due to the absence of Jim Douglas, division engineer for the state highway department. C. W Furr chairs the group with Wade Brymer, Mark Taylor, George Broome and Ted Lokey as members. The Panhandle highway plans will be discussed with the division engineer at the Chamber of Commerce offices at 4 p.m.
Stuttgart Germany runs its automobiles on clarified sewer gas the commerce department said based on a consul report. In 1938 the city supplied about 1 000 000 cubic meters of fuel and savings from the change allowed amortization of conversion costs for the fleet.
Underhill Vermont August 1 P Quiet retiring Hiram Bogue 78 year old father of the tallest family in the world was carried to his grave by six sorrowing sons. Seven foot Max the only son to equal his height was a pallbearer along with Leland Alvin Howard and Arthur six feet six inches brothers the eldest. Their mother at five foot ten sat with Roy six four and sisters Tia six two Mrs Ed Trish and Mrs Henry McClelland all six feet three. All children live in New England. Hogue left 16 grandchildren one of whom already is six feet seven inches tall.
Seven hundred and forty two aviators from the disbanded Czechoslovak air force arrived in France to join French forces. They landed at Calais and Boulogne in groups of 177 and 585 and traveled to Paris by train.
In Cleveland Aug 1 non-striking workers entered the Fisher body plant to relieve about 300 besieged colleagues who spent the night inside. Police and riot zone measures limited pickets near the 40 acre site as clashes yesterday left 46 injured. Over 150 officers remained on duty while UAW lists 27 workers labeled worst scabs.
Berlin reports Der Angriff lauds Germany's improved military and strategic position since World War I. The piece credits the progress to two words Adolf Hitler and marks the 25 year span since the war's start.

Rioting erupted in Bombay as prohibition began with clashes between Moslems and Hindus. Police fired on marchers protesting government taxes to offset liquor revenue loss. Thousands attended rival processions, anti drink placards and leaflets circulated, while authorities prepared for possible protests after the pre prohibition celebrations.
WPA workers released from projects before July 31 will remain on the rolls under an 18 month vacation rule, District Director A A Meredith said. Replacements notified may start work if project facilities allow, but most likely short employment due to quotas. Washington announced the decision while awaiting amendments to the Lending Bill.
Group Hospital Service Inc moves toward opening an Amarillo area office with final fund committee reports due. The plan, approved by the Potter County Medical Society, seeks $1,000 to establish the office, with the Dallas headquartered insurer to serve Panhandle employers.
White House officials say President Roosevelt will act on the Hatch clean politics bill within 24 hours and issue a statement explaining the action. They declined to reveal whether he will sign or veto the sweeping reform measure.
U S Army Air Corps planes set records at Dayton and Langley Field. A super Fortess carried 31 025 pounds to 8 200 feet, beating a Russian 28 660 pounds at 6 561 feet. Maj Caleb V Haynes and Capt W D Old commanded the test.
CLARK GABLE and Carole Lombard laughed at the scene when an 18 year old Polish youth hid in Gable's dressing room closet. The actor overpowered and turned him over to police. Officers expect psychiatric evaluation before charges. Broski sought money, claimed he wanted to meet Gable.
Maury Maverick, mayor of San Antonio and former Texas representative, declared in Maury for Milwaukee that if the Democratic party wants to win in 1940 it must renominate President Roosevelt. He spoke in Milwaukee on August 1.
Weather outlook for Amarillo and West Texas and New Mexico calls for fair tonight, with Wednesday partly cloudy and cooler conditions. Panhandle and New Mexico regions show unsettled mountain weather with cooler trend and no major temperature change, extremes noted from 24 hours ending 6:30 A M with a high near 92 and a noon reading of 89.
D. H. Myatt a motorcycle delivery man suffered contusions and abrasions when his bike struck a car at Seventh Avenue and Adams Street about 11 30 this morning. He is employed by the C and M Delivery Company and lives at 216 North West Seventh Avenue.
A. B. Paterson, president of New Orleans Public Service, Inc., announced he refused the dock board presidency offered ten days earlier by Governor Earl K. Long to succeed Seymour Weiss, who was seated after a federal grand jury indicted him for mail fraud.

Lola and Marjory McCauley and Co R Turner of Ethel Missouri suffered serious injuries when Turner's car hit a concrete culvert near Adrian nine miles east of town. Pat Evans escaped injury. The four were taken to Adrian tourist camp then to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.
City records show Amarillo's July daily average water use at 7,383,000 gallons, higher than June’s 6,573,000 despite June flooding. The city cites heavy June rains as a factor and notes June saw an all time pumpage peak of 10.4 and 10.5 million gallons on June 15 16.
Irvin S. Cobb aged 64, famed writer and actor, was hospitalized in San Francisco today with stomach upset and what doctors called the summer flu. His condition was described as not serious but keeping him in bed at the hospital.
In Boston on August 17 Miss Minnie Vedenecki 55 was beaten naked and tied to her bed with curtains and sheets. Found unconscious in her apartment, she was hospitalized on the danger list at City Hospital. Landlady Mrs Celia Shapiro reported the attack last Friday. Nine months earlier Vedenecki was beaten while walking near her home. two girls were named but no suspects were caught.
Unofficial sources in Warsaw report police found a Ukrainian Nationalist movement said to be fostered in Germany. About 40 Ukrainians were arrested in southeastern Poland, notably in the Lemberg district.
