Charles Urschel, 40 year old Oklahoma oil millionaire, was ransomed after nine days in captivity. He was blindfolded for most of the period, driven about 500 miles, and kept in a three room shack. His wife paid the ransom. he returned home with his family by late night.
United Press reports more than 170000 employers align with wage lifting and work spreading codes as Blue Eagle symbol spreads nationwide. Regional offices list certificates of agreement by city including New York 16000 Philadelphia 22000 Chicago 20000 Cleveland 21000 San Francisco 23000 and other locales with several thousand more awaiting processing.
Washington Aug 1 Some facts on wage rise and hour cuts in new codes for retailers and foodstuffs dealers. Two codes apply to grocery and furniture hardware department store clothing and more with Roosevelt framework. Effective pending full codes. Retailers: 40 hour week or longer for certain staff, time and a third after 48 hours, weekly minimums from 13 to 14 dollars by city size, higher rates in large areas. Applies to several associations and voluntary non members. Foodstuffs: 48 hour week with 8 hour days, 12 days every six months plus pre holiday days may extend to 10 hours, longer weeks for specific roles with time and a third after 46 hours, minimum 15 dollars weekly in large cities.
Amarillo residents rally to Roosevelt’s National Industrial Recovery Act program to curb unemployment. Chicago Aug 1 A sharp drop in future grain prices was halted for at least two weeks by the Board of Trade with a new ruling that sets minimum prices. The measure was enacted after a lengthy meeting of directors who approved the action.
Wheat surged at the Chicago Board of Trade as prices hit the 5 cent limit in two futures months, with other grains rising several cents. Flood of crop-damage reports from the American and Canadian Northwest fueled the market, bolstering gains across corn oats and related grains.
The board set a temporary price floor effective today through August 15, limiting how far prices can fall for wheat and other grains. Upward moves remain allowed within the daily limits of five cents for wheat barley and rye four for corn and three for oats. Reported talks with Washington officials influenced the move which also covers future provisions. September wheat cannot dip below 92 1 8 on the Chicago board during the period. If changes are planned after August 15 three days notice will be issued.

Archibald Johnson, son of U S Senator Hiram Johnson, died by his own hand at the Hillsborough home in Burlingame California.
