A windstorm with gusts over 70 mph dominates the Panhandle as residents compare flood risk and wheat prospects. Alfred Tack shares local humor, Madator Meadors headlines, and a May 11 barn dance at Rainbow Gardens to aid service men and underprivileged children.
Three members of Col. F. C. Black's staff assume duties at the Air Force Technical School. Maj. N. C Voshel arrives with wife and daughter and will be post adjutant. Lt. Julius J. Augustus and Lt. R. San Miguel joined from Sheppard Field with roles pending.
Kansas City market data show livestock and prices for April 30 1942 with hogs at 3 000 head salable and about 3 150 total with prices near 13.75 to 13.85 for heavy hogs. Cattle calves and stockers priced mixed with medium weight fed steers around 13.50 and 11.25 to 13.35 for various grades. Sheep trades show 6 000 head with lambs and wooled lambs above 13.50 and spring lambs near 14.00, no feed lambs sold early. Financial industrial fund quotations reflect liquidation and offering values based on April 28 closings.
Treasury release shows U S Navy personnel in the Manila Bay area have bought war bonds totaling 407000 dollars to date. The telegram predicts the total will soon exceed 500000 dollars. The message comes from the naval commandant in the Manila Bay area likely on Corregidor Island.
Secretary of War Stimson urged communities to hold send-off demonstrations for men entering army service to show pride and confidence. He noted fewer parades now than in the previous war and encouraged home towns to support departing soldiers.

Major Ernest G. Carlson, a selective service official, predicted that at least 38,500,000 men are needed to win the war. He said boards will draft nearly all men except chemical and aeronautical engineers and tool and die makers as they complete their work. The remark came in St. Louis on April 30.
Berlin reports via German broadcasts that six additional merchant vessels totaling about 33 000 tons were sunk by U boat attacks off the U S coast. A seventh ship, termed a fairly large merchant vessel, was damaged by a torpedo hit.
The Amarillo College Band conducts its annual patrons concert in the college auditorium at Twenty Second and Washington Street. The 32 piece band led by conductor Robert Louis Barron presents patriotic marches light opera and light classics with soloists Russell Curtis pianist and Barbara Keelan clarinetist. The event begins at 8 15 PM and admission is free.
Mrs. B. M. Puckett who is seriously ill at Northwest Texas Hospital is reported to be somewhat better today by attendants.

Pauline Cressback remained in a Quanah hospital. Lewis Ballar's garage was blown over fifty yards while his car stayed inside undamaged. Russell Beverly lost roofed sections of his home and office. Tom Bell’s garage apartment lost its west wall yet furniture remained untouched. Mrs J Olds witnessed a garage collapse onto a storm cellar and then vanish after she closed the door.
