Regional Conservator H H Finnell announces a 25 000 acre Wind Erosion demonstration area near Clovis Curry County New Mexico on private land. Beginning soon after July 1 the five year cooperative program will introduce conservation methods and soil engineering with government technical assistance for three years. Contour listing crop residue management strip cropping tree planting pasture improvement hammock leveling and other practices will reduce wind erosion on about half the land.
The Northwest Texas Hospital board of managers reappoints five members for one or two year terms and adds a new member. Reappointed are Dr. B. M. Puckett Dr. R. L. Rogers and O Applequist for one year and Dr. Jason Robberson and Dr. L. K. Patton for two years. Homer Wheeler, a real estate operator, is the new member replacing Walter Irvin and will serve two years. The board directs hospital affairs with Harry Hatch as superintendent responsible to the managers.
Last rites for Fredrick J. Weigley 54, longtime Amarillo resident, were held at 4 p.m. from N. 8. Griggs and Sons chapel. Rev. Hubert Thomason officiated. Pallbearers: John Milligan Emmett Maulden C A McDowell H L Maulden G H McCuiston Hugh Brown. Interment at Liano Cemetery. Survived by widow Bertha and children Freddie Pauline Bertha Jean Johnnie, four sisters Mary Clark of San Jon New Mexico and Fannie Annie Lucie Weigley of Rio Frio, and brothers Will and Ralph.
Effective Saturday all bus fares are reduced announced by H. A. Peters of Union Bus Depot. Lee Way Amarillo to Albuquerque drops from 6.75 to 5.70 and New Mexico Transportation Amarillo to Albuquerque via Clovis also lowers to 5.70. Greyhound cuts fares and offers optional routes via Oklahoma City to Fort Worth Dallas Houston and San Antonio with Oklahoma City leg dropping from 5.00 to 4.70.
Frank W. Leach, new Texas Company representative in Amarillo, announced a fleet of 30 standard and leading makes of cars will arrive June 30 for the annual road test. Leach recently moved from Texarkana and has seven years with the company.
Kansas City hogs and cattle markets mixed with sparse demand and steady stockers. Hogs at 10.10 top. cattle, calves, and vealers largely unchanged. sheep slow with prices firming slightly on some lambs. In New Orleans Cotton, futures rose 14 to 19 points on opening amid short covering and Liverpool strength. May 12.75, July 12.82, Oct 12.67, Dec 12.76, Jan 12.77, March 12.80, with some later profit taking from early highs.
A parish report notes $5,266 raised toward a $25,000 recreation hall on Washington Street. Bishop Lucey praised progress as the drive passes halfway after four days with non Catholic donations welcomed. Campaign HQ hours include Friday, Saturday evenings and next week starting Monday. A flying squadron will seek un reached prospects early next week.
Chemists from oil and gas firms colleges and the helium plant forming the Panhandle Plains section of the American Chemical Society will meet at 7 30 tomorrow night in the Herring Hotel for their first gathering. A charter has been granted by the society and officers will be elected after a business session following an a la carte dinner. Dr C W Seibel will address the group and all local chemists are invited to join.
Robert Cornelius of Panhandle was rushed by ambulance to St. Anthony's Hospital after a fall on East Fourth Avenue this morning. He was later listed as not in a serious condition this afternoon.
Charley Lowe plans a Dutch lunch for returnees from 1917 as 70 World War I veterans travel from across the Tri-State Territory to meet at the Legion Home. Commanders include John Boyce of Amarillo and Tom Collins of Channing, with Charley Hoppin as adjutant and E R Bruce as liaison.
John William Corn, 17, Amarillo High School junior, lost his right hand and mangled forearm when a two inch gas pipe bomb exploded in a basement. He faced critical condition for 48 hours, then began recovery at St. Anthony's hospital. The device was built by his friend Richard Johnson at 700 West Sixteenth Street.
Seniors recited comical pieces including Ive Been Bad All Day and Minnie the Moocher as a combined chorus and solo. John Lawson won the best kid costume in pink sun-back rompers while Lois Knight won the girls prize in a light blue dress with a large bow. Walter Thompson presented the prizes as senior class officers announced.
The proposal envisions a district covering Armstrong through Bailey in Texas with three New Mexico counties Curry Quay and Roosevelt optional by resident vote. Its aim is closer cooperation with federal programs to conserve water from the Red Brazos and Canadian rivers and manage district affairs.
S G Gibb Bobbitt a Panhandle farmer and longtime resident was found dead in his bed this morning at his home one mile north of the city. Death is believed due to a heart attack. He leaves a wife two sons Glenn in Amarillo and Frederick of Panhandle and three daughters Mrs Elmer Moss of Carlsbad NM Mrs Knox Whitney of Amarillo and Geraldine of Panhandle and one sister Mrs FE A Sibley of Fort Worth. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
A plan proposes a board of directors with one member from each county and a general manager. The bill includes a $3,000 appropriation to support the new structure.
March 1937 saw gains in department store sales bank debits wholesale trade and oil production with construction contracts posting a loss. Commercial failures fell and defaults declined 41 percent from February. First quarter totals at district level were the best on record. Dry goods wholesale rose and four of five lines posted gains. Planting was delayed by weather in Texas but fieldwork progressed in early April. Wheat output in Texas was forecast at 37 205 000 bushels.
A Texas farm report shows a harvest near 1.2 bushels, livestock sales down 8.3 from last year, while marketings of principal farm products up 29.0 percent. Cotton receipts at Galveston and Houston ports rose 17.5 percent over February but fell 20.1 percent from March 1936. Oil production in Texas increased daily by 68,967 barrels from February to March across major fields.
