John J. Raskob, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, was received by Pope Pius in a private audience at the Vatican. After the audience he introduced his family to the Pontiff in a brief reception before leaving.
Cloudburst floods hit Sinton Texas, boats used citywide as water rose to window sills. In Corpus Christi area heavy rains stalled traffic, damaged crops, and washed out rail lines with five to 15 inches reported. no deaths confirmed.
Revolting convicts at the Ohio Penitentiary known as White City attempted an escape from the cell blocks. Guards fired automatic rifles to repel the mutineers who briefly held guards as prisoners before National Guard threats prompted their release and return to cells. Several inmates were wounded.
A seven day old infant was returned to L M Darnell after a woman identified as Mrs D A Fesler of Kansas claimed a Sunday School class wanted to help. She admitted planning to pass off the child as her own to please her husband who demanded a child. Police recovered the baby after a passerby heard crying and alerted officers. Mrs Fesler, married twice previously, told the district attorney she feared her husband would divorce her and sought a baby to satisfy him. No charges filed by noon. investigation continues in Potter County.
President William Butterworth of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States praised American business for challenging aging “rule of thumb” economies. He told the annual meeting that business has broken new ground by coordinating effort to smooth the business cycle and create an orderly progression.
T W Davidson of Dallas former lieutenant governor told Corsicana Praetorians he might seek the governorship. He spoke briefly on the penitentiary system, fertile farms, and how proper management plus canning and factories could save millions for state wards.
The Freiburg Passion Play company led by Adolf Fassnacht arrives in Amarillo for a two day engagement at the City Auditorium under the Tri-State Fair Association. Three performances are planned tonight and Wednesday with ticket demand high and 500 seats set aside for box office sales.

Nine more victims of the Jamaica ginger paralysis era are reported among Wichita women from the College Hill area. Health authorities say the women drank a small amount of punch spiked with alcohol, though Jamaica ginger itself was not used. Three are paralyzed, three cannot use their legs and are bedridden, and the rest walk with crutches.

Chamber of commerce schedules are being checked and most residents have been counted with only a few uncounted individuals remaining. results expected by next Sunday or early next week.
Duncan Okla April 20 After a preliminary hearing County Judge John W Scott ordered FE S Hembree and A Hembree Indian brothers held without bond for trial on statutory and robbery charges from an attack on Miss Leota Bosley a 16 year old school teacher at Love The prosecution used only Miss Bosley who identified the brothers as her attackers and Dr J L Patterson of Duncan as witnesses The defense offered no testimony Miss Bosley recounted the night she and Chad Thurman a Nocona Texas printer were kidnapped near Loco and taken into a pasture where she was attacked and Thurman robbed She testified that E S Hembree the elder of the two attempted to shoot Thurman also The young teacher was in a Gainesville Texas hospital for several days Spectators in the court room were searched for weapons by order of Judge Scott E S Hembree 39 was pardoned in 1923 by former Governor Wal ton after serving six years of a life sentence for murder and robbery in Pushmataha County A Y Hembree 23 served a five year term in the state reformatory at Granite for automobile theft in Stephens County
Governor Dan Moody announced that a new insane asylum for West Texas will be needed by end of 1931. He said two thousand inmates is the economical maximum per facility, with existing centers in Austin Terrell and San Antonio at that level and expansions planned for Wichita Falls and Rusk. The proposed site should be in West Texas to reduce transport costs for inmates and visitors.
The Panhandle Plains received another round of rain with Lubbock reporting about three inches and Plainview two inches while Amarillo totals reach 1.08 inches since Friday. Dalhart to Chillicothe and Rock Island area saw heavy showers with two inches or more, and crews continued field work as schedules were adjusted.

Floydada April 29 Special to The GI C Snodgrass 79 pioneer merchant of Floyd County died at his residence at 10 this morning. He had lived in Floyd County 89 years and was well known in the Panhandle. Survived by 12 children including A M Snodgrass Mrs W A Savage and Mrs Tom B Triplett Amarillo Mrs KR Bruner Tucumcari NM and Mrs B E Reeves Jericho. Services will be held from the First Baptist Church at 3 o clock Wednesday afternoon.
