Soviet Guards and American First Army meet near Riesa on the Elbe, signaling a broad front join between Western and Soviet troops. Patton’s forces push into Austria while U.S. Ninth Army crosses the Elbe near Tangermuende, with Berlin under heavy artillery pressure as the Nazi defense collapses.
Fifth Army units closed to within 35 miles of Milan as Allies push along the Ligurian coast. Genoa fell under rapid advance while Verona’s Adige line fell, leaving Bremner Pass blockaded. French troops crossed from the Riviera toward Bordighera as the main drive threatened northern Italy.
President Truman proclaims that Anglo American and Soviet troops have united to split the Nazi regime, extinguishing Hitler’s hope. He credits the joint effort as proof that the Allied powers can plan and fight together to achieve final victory and advance peace and freedom.
Prime Minister Churchill declares that Allied forces have traversed Germany and joined hands to destroy Nazi resistance. He vows ample forces, unwavering resolve, and victorious comradeship as they march forward to subdue the Hitler Reich.

The Texas Senate voted to adjourn the current session at noon on May 10 with no provision for future reconvening. The adjournment resolution moves to the House for consideration.
