St Petersburg Florida April 27 Ray Flemming cub reporter for a local paper made news on his first waterfront assignment by falling into the water. He was rescued unharmed and continued with his duties.
Dallas April 27 Karl A Crowley candidate for governor of Texas outlined a 17 point platform attacking the present state government system. He called for barring officeholders who regulate oil and gas from campaigning for another office without resigning and for abolishing the ad valorem tax in favor of a fairer levy. He urged a severance tax on oil gas and sulphur to fund state needs and support an endowment for education while paying county and city debts. He vowed to take pensions out of politics and to guarantee pensions as a legal right for the aged teachers the blind and dependent children.
A mine explosion at the St. Clair Coal Company in Pottsville, Pennsylvania left at least three men dead and 25 trapped. Frank Montgomery, 30, died on the surface. Andrew Potts, 42, and Nicholas Fac e, 40, died at the Pottsville hospital from burn injuries. The blast occurred 500 feet underground, a mile from the shaft bottom, hindering rescue efforts due to distance from the shaft.
Michael Selwyn 66 a member of a noted theatrical family and credited with discovering Charlie Chaplin died after a long illness in a New Rochelle hospital. He had been stage manager for Oscar Hammerstein at the Victoria theater Times Square and later worked with brothers Arch and Edgar Selwyn in theatrical productions. Masonic funeral services are planned at Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York.
