Washington April 27 Secretary Mills charged the Patman 2 billion soldier bonus would impair public and private credit, risk inflation, and undermine confidence. He told the House Ways and Means committee the bill creates dishonest dollars and delays maturity of the certificates, calling it fiscally and morally bankrupt.
A tornado carved a 300 yard path through Shelby County Tennessee on Monday killing five people and injuring more than 30. A ruined old Southern home near Millington owned by T. J. Dale shows the devastation as Mrs. Dale perished in the collapse. Property damage is unestimated but will exceed $100,000.
Delegates to the Woman's Missionary Union conference gather at noon for registration as more than 400 guests from 19 counties in District 10 are expected. Activities include devotions led by Mrs. Grundy, committee reports, standing committee meetings, and an 8 pm young people program. Dinner at 6, with Mrs. Stanley as general chair and Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Atterbury directing music and meals.
In Austin on April 27 the Texas State Supreme Court met briefly and adopted resolutions marking the deaths of Judge J. W. Hill of San Angelo and Appellate Judge H. C. Randolph of Amarillo. The court will reconvene tomorrow.
Alfred E. Smith swept Massachusetts for the Democratic nomination and led Roosevelt in Pennsylvania as the March toward the Democratic convention began. Massachusetts awarded 36 delegates to Smith, the first to go to his slate. Roosevelt led in Pennsylvania by about 3,000 votes with 66 of 76 delegates expected to back him if the margin holds.
Four Americans accused in Honolulu honor killing await verdict as Clarence Darrow, age 75, aims to deliver a two to three hour closing argument with a doctor present. The jury panel consists of seven Caucasians, three Hawaiian half casts and two Chinese as deliberations loom after Prosecutor Kelley drafts his closing remarks.

The Amarillo district of Methodism reports 600 to 700 new converts over three days in Canyon. San Jacinto Church Amarillo added 170, Polk Street 165, and other Amarillo churches 25 to 30 each. President Hoover addressed the 24th governors conference in Richmond urging lower taxes and reduced duplication in taxation. He outlined four tax reforms including ultimate tax relief, new revenue forms, eliminating overlap among levels of government, and reforming the tax base to ease burdens on property owners and farmers. He warned public officials to endure unpopularity for the national interest and urged public support for reform.
Dallas report says priceless political records and autographs of Tom Love Democratic leader were destroyed in a fire that leveled his home twelve miles southwest of Dallas. The blaze began in a library fireplace and spread to the roof of the two story brick house. Loss estimated at 16000 dollars. Autographs and records from Love’s time as under secretary of the treasury under Wilson were destroyed.
Henry L. Stimson, secretary of state, sails for the United States next Tuesday. He is listed to depart Cannes aboard the Vulcania, bound for New York with a May 4 arrival. Despite two Geneva visits this week, he failed to unite the big five diplomats on French and American disarmament plans.

Harbin Manchuria April 27 Japan's Manchurian forces began a major operation to quell a Chinese revolt against Henry Pu Yi's government. Three brigades moved by rail and river to suppress revolts in Tunghua district and Hungliao region near Mukden. Major Generals Murai Yoda and Nakamura lead columns toward Wangcheng Sanhsin as unrest grows. Japanese police reinforced Hunghua as tensions rise.
