Arguments for Legal Beer Grow in House Judiciary Panel
Washington April 22. Additional arguments for legalizing 2.75 per cent beer sale were presented to the house judiciary committee. Witnesses urged modification of the Volstead act, criticizing enforcement and arguing Congress has authority to permit 2.75 per cent beverages since the Eighteenth Amendment does not define intoxicating drinks. Henry Priest of St. Louis urged legalizing beer to curb violations and criticized enforcement, advocating moral suasion over force. Priest blamed bootleggers on the Anti Saloon League and warned repeal would come if voters supported enforcement.
