ISLIP N Y April 20 Police and Coast Guard authorities searched Great South Bay for the bodies of ten Sea Scouts who perished when their 36 foot converted cabin cruiser foundered two miles from shore during an Easter vacation cruise. Skipper Fred Mayer 30 of North Bellmore survived after being rescued by a passing ship as crew members leaped overboard and tied a line around him. The Coast Guard recovered five bodies and two others were found later in the area. Mayer described a huge wave smashing the hatch door sweeping one boy overboard and others attempting rescue before the dinghy capsized. The tragedy left seven others missing and presumed dead due to exposure and exhaustion.

Mickle a 22 year old Windber Pennsylvania pilot was killed when the attack bomber he piloted crashed in the bed of the Canadian River five miles north of Fritch He was alone in the plane The accident is under investigation The flight began at Amarillo Army Air Field and the squadron was temporarily stationed there Will Rogers Field Oklahoma City is the home base of the squadron.
