Plane Chased 75 Minutes at Sea in Wartime Mission

Lt. Lloyd M. Hodges now stationed at Ellington Field after 15 months overseas recalls a 75 minute chase by 27 enemy fighters while his B 24 and six fellow bombers attacked a Jop held port in New Ireland. He credits his crew with shooting down six attackers and keeping all planes in the air despite dwindling ammo. Hodges, Amarillo High School graduate, completed 40 missions in the 13th Air Force and earned the Air Medal with five clusters along with six Southwest Pacific battle stars the Philippines liberation ribbon and a Purple Heart for a leg wound.

Collar Guards Young Plants to Fight Cutworms

Miss Pauline Lokey, county home demonstration agent, urges gardeners to use a cardboard collar around young plants to deter cutworms. The collar, about the weight of a penny postcard, is rolled around the stem and sunk an inch, leaving two inches above ground. Poisoned bait may also be used after plants are set out. The article also notes Ronald Black’s return to Great Falls with Air Transport Command and mentions Texas annexation provisions for potential state division.
