Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace unveiled the 1939 crop insurance program in Omara Nebraska. He said crop insurance would stabilize supplies and prices, combat boom and bust cycles, and bolster democracy. The plan lets farmers insure half or three quarters of the average yield with premiums tied to land quality. If successful the approach could expand to cotton and corn.

Paris April 19 Generalissimo Francisco Franco threatened to punish foreign enemies fighting in Spain in a radio address marking the Burgos government’s first anniversary. Nationalist forces reached the Pyrenees sealing five mountain passes and blocking Loyalist retreat into France from the Bay of Biscay to Andorra. An entire Loyalist division crossed the Pyrenees but was trapped by Navarre forces led by General Solchaga. Peasants from the Ara Valley fled the advancing Nationalists.
Amarillo welcomes a new bake shop at 706 West Sixteenth Avenue announced by manager C. C. Keeney. Owned with R. M. Keeney and Leo Keeney, the remodeled building offers new equipment. shop will sell wholesale and retail, with emphasis on party orders.
The long time Amarillo resident and relief advocate Arthur McCracken, noted for boosting gas regulation laws, died June 19, 1937 after a life of aiding the less fortunate. Survivors include his wife, son Arthur, daughter-in-law, two grandchildren Martha and John, a sister Catherine Merrill of Belvedere Illinois, and brother T E McCracken of Gary Indiana. The Arthur McCracken family is quarantined for scarlet fever.
The Texas State Employment Service office here will be closed all day Thursday for Independence Day. In March the local office placed 499 unemployed in private work, a record, with April expected near 600. At week’s end 319 jobs had been found. about 2,000 applicants remain on the rolls. In other news, Mrs. O W Moore Sheriff Bill Adams and Mrs Arthur Ball traveled to Austin and then Waco for the Texas Conference of Social Welfare, taking a feeble minded child to the state home in Austin.
Prices for major farm commodities at Chicago markets show declines of 13 to 50 percent from last year as the 1938 harvest cycle nears. Wheat and corn stocks are up while prices remain well below 1937 peaks, with government statisticians forecasting lower farm income despite larger supplies. Hog, butter, and cattle prices also show sizable drops from a year ago amid a broad market slump.

In Flint Michigan April 194 missing date the Fisher Body Plant No 1 and Buick Motor Company assembly line shut down as UAW renewed dues collection at gates. About 3,700 Fisher workers and 1,500 Buick line workers sent home. Buick says 6,000 more could be laid off if Fisher does not resume in two days.

She expects Germany to change slowly, noting the old country character and a possible August return unless events intervene.
