Nine Die In Blast At McCoy Mine Near Radford Virginia
Radford Virginia April 18 nine coal miners were killed in a deep shaft explosion at the Great Valley Anthracite mine in McCoy twelve miles northeast of Radford. Rescue workers had located nine of the twelve men reported trapped and all nine were dead. The explosion occurred around 1030 A M striking workers in a low shaft under the New River splitting Montgomery and Pulaski counties. Mine manager Cloyd Martin said the blast knocked him off his feet while others remained missing.
