Electric Eyes Remove All Distance Limits

New York April 14. American Telegraph and Telephone scientists demo a television system using electric eyes to transmit live sight across oceans. Photo-electric cells in a camera scan a scene such as Herbert Hoover speaking, converting light into electric impulses at up to 20,000 per second. Signals travel via wires or radio, then reproduce on a neon tube display at the receiving end.

Television ends and the sight returns in a glass screen

An article describes how a perforated disc at the sending station and a synchronized disc at the receiving end scan a scene. Beams sweep a 2 by 2 1/2 inch glass screen, moving top to bottom and then side to side in tiny jumps. Eighteen frames a second reproduce the subject with a flicker too fast for the eye to notice.

Television's promise and limits in early experiments

The screen picture is painted and erased by electricity eighteen times a second, appearing continuous to the eye. The system currently handles close-ups well, with small screens and limited reproduction. Synchronizing transmitter and receiver is hard, and large amplification is needed. Yet televised transmission has been proven workable and researchers will invest to broaden its use.
