In Houston on April 12 a burglar who ransacked the Metlock residence tossed Mrs Metlock's purse from a window. The purse bounced under the house and was later recovered by two detectives with $34 still inside.

The House appropriations committee refused a 449 951 item to set up new Weather Bureau stations at 33 airports including Amarillo and to restore hourly airport reports at nine airway points. The item was dropped from the agriculture department supply bill, despite agency and budget bureau support.
The 14 clubs that form the federation honored past presidents from 1913 to 1938 with a luncheon in the Amarillo Hotel Blue Room. Mrs. J. W. Walker of Plainview attended as an out-of-town guest. Since its 1913 founding, the clubs have led park beautification, library support, Day Nursery work, Christmas lighting, and Philharmonic organization. The Senate moved to take up a Hatch bill that would keep federal employees from party caucuses and state, county, or precinct conventions that nominate national leaders. Barkley opposed but a coalition of Republicans and Democrats advanced the measure, with an amendment exempting those federal workers chosen in regular public elections. Violations carry a $1000 fine, up to one year jail, and dismissal.
Amarillo postmaster W. D. DeGrassi announced a new two way star route will begin April 20, speeding mail between Amarillo and Lubbock. A one way night run from Lubbock to Amarillo already exists, with a return trip Amarillo to Lubbock at 1 a m, saving about seven hours in night mail handling.
Paris April 12 The chamber of deputies approved Daladiers national defense government 576 to 5 in his first appearance since formation. He pledged to ensure immediate resumption of work in factories producing arms and to have strikers evacuate over 120 plants currently occupied.
Ambulance drivers in New York move to quit work at midnight Friday despite a city hospital department order forbidding interference with service. Union secretary E. J Cohan says most drivers have families and may prefer relief to 84 hour weeks. They seek 48 hour weeks and a 1800 dollar annual wage.
